and I'm assuming there is a story that you wanted feedback about. However, if the story claims that millions of phone numbers have been accumulated, does that automatically assume that each one is being investigated/targeted?

My local ISP has a large number of customers on file, too....does that mean that all of us are being monitored?

The telephone company has millions of phone numbers and addresses in their yellow book....does that assume that they are listening in to every conversation every customer has?

Come on............there really IS a difference between HAVING information and TARGETING people, JP.

they aren't trolling through those numbers, what's your problem? The fact that the cell phone companies provided all of their lists? Hell, Google, Yahoo, and MS all have to, too, and you ARE aware of that, right? And yet you still use any or all of them every day. duhhhhhh

The President says they target Al Quaeda and affiliates.

Why/how do they get millions of numbers?

Are ''Al Quaeda and affiliates'' a bunch of teenagers on the phone all hours of the day and night making phone calls?

Or is it a moving target

China didn't keep a list of what sites people visited, they just banned the sites.

America keeps a list of who calls whom.

Evidently you aren't aware
May 11, 2006 4:58AM PDT

that Homeland Security has also been getting ISP info from MS, Google, and Yahoo in order to also get terrorist email and messages?

When the government gets phone numbers, ISP info, etc, it comes to them in the millions and all must be compared with or check out against other intel they have so they can weed out the good stuff from the chafe. That DOES NOT constitute targeting.

That's the point.

No...he said they TARGET
May 11, 2006 6:36AM PDT

Al Quda and affiliates/associates......the run of the mill populace IS NOT targeted just because their cell phone number is on a list.

Are you just acting dense or is this something you just don't get?

Not just on a list, Toni.

All of the information for all of these calls are collected. It's a widespread net that catches all in hopes that they are able to find what they're looking for as they sift through the personal information of the innocent.

The personal information
May 11, 2006 8:11AM PDT

you mention is actually phone calls (numbers) called in order to compare with other known terrorist numbers being called. That's not a 'targeting' the innocents situation...it's a COMPARISON of numbers being called to find coverts/sympathizers who are actually in communication with the bad guys.

If you don't have one or more of those numbers already known about, what do you care? The phone company ALREADY has all your freaking records....just cuz they HAVE them doesn't mean the phone company has targeted you for anything either. You don't have a problem with a PUBLIC phone company having those records....why are you so worried about the GOVERNMENT having them?

You wear paranoia well........

Re: it's a COMPARISON
May 11, 2006 1:58PM PDT

What's to compare?

#xxx-xxxx phones #yyy-yyyy

They want to compare with other known terrorist numbers being called by #yyy-yyyy.

Seems simple enough, now how should we do that.

We could list all the phone calls made between any American and any other American and then look for #yyy-yyyy and see who they called.

Or we could ''target'' #yyy-yyyy and see who they call.

This is a tuff decision, Let me think about this.

There will, from now on, be respect for each other. You don't have to agree with a post...but you will have to 'argue' that difference with respect for the other person's opinion. There will be no 'zingers' about how somebody shouldn't have an opinion just because they don't live here in the USA. CNET, and thus Speakeasy, is a world-wide community, and as such we have members from all over the world, and they're entitled to their opinions and biases as much as you are. Everyone will never agree, but we CAN learn from each others' cultures, beliefs, and viewpoints....an open mind is a sponge; soak up the knowledge that others have and you better yourself in the long run. The door of knowledge swings both ways....information is the key.....insults slam the door the fastest.

May 11, 2006 2:55PM PDT

I'm expressing an opinion.

IF you just wanted to know you would not make remarks like

why should you care what our government is doing.

Why should you care about anything that goes on outside of America?

Why should you care if I have an opinion on what goes on in America?

- Collapse -
JPBill...you have to EARN respect. NOBODY just ups and...
May 11, 2006 4:49PM PDT

...LEGISLATES respect.

- Collapse -
I suspect it does affect him, if
May 11, 2006 5:01PM PDT

anyone within the US ever calls him, or he calls anyone in the US.

Heck, with telephone switching everywhichway now, imitating the internet routing in a small way, someone might make a call from Cananda to England, it could get routed, and possibly recorded, through US swtichgears. And if they manage to trace everything going through a US owned communications satellite, the number of out of US calls go up.

Not that it's a huge problem, a bit worrisome perhaps, but the info is available to a degree anyway. But it isn't necessarily limited to calls made or received strictly in the USA.

being stepped on here and there won't matter much if we all die at the hands of terrorists....and those deaths have been happening "randomly" for years and years. I would GLADLY sacrifice a few of my rights in order to stop them. What are YOU willing to sacrifice for your country to make it safe from outside threats (which are actually no longer threats but ACTIONS)?
