only getting to desktop all of a sudden.

by bklynrickel / April 13, 2008 9:29 AM PDT

trying to boot my old reliable e machines 64 3200 desktop, and all im getting is the desktop with some taskbar items loaded, but not all. try using the keyboard and mouse to input or even shut down and no response. the cursor shows a continuous hour glass. i have a wireless keyboard and mouse that has been working flawlessly until now. not sure what gives. all i know is that my avast globe on the lower right starts rotating at boot up and then stops, and no other items come up on the taskbar. any help on this appreciated. thanks.

the blue hard drive light flickers so i dont think it can be a hard drive issue. the items that dont come up on the taskbar are an hp printer logo and a zone alarm free logo.

Get a PS/2 keyboard. . .

In reply to: yes, USB.

One of the bad things about USB keyboards and mice is that they are not on line in the early stages of a boot. The PS/2 keyboard is. This may help you get into Safe Mode.

did 2 system restores in safe mode and still get the freezes 90% of the time - maybe 95%. unable to load and use firefox now for some reason. i guess it was renamed or something in the restore. do i need to do something else in safe mode other than a restore?

Problem solved!

I don't know whether there was any corruption, but the culpprit turned out to be good old Avast 4. I don't know why. I've used Avast for several years till now without a hitch. Anyway, I uninstalled it and downloaded AVG and boot up is smooth as a baby's bottom.

Thank you for your assistance Corypheaus. It is much appreciated!

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
