online video problems

by kiretefu2 / January 16, 2010 11:48 PM PST

Hi! I have 1.05GHz AMD, 512MB RAM, and Nvidia Geforce2 32MB. Running win Xp sp3. I have a problem with viewing online videos . The problem is not with streaming, the internet speed is fine. But the picture is chappy, or interrapted...I dont know exactly how to describe it...the video is playing slow, like I would have a very old computer with bad performance. However, all the videos, movies, dvds or whatever, after I download they play fine. Without problems. Just when its online. Can it be a performance problem?? Please help me. thanx. Steve

Sorry, it will have trouble downloading, rendering and more. You have what is at lower end of the computing spectrum so that's it. Some get upset when you tell them.

So you have a problem looking at streaming video (that's what it's called). Not sure why you say it isn't with streaming.

There are 2 possible bottlenecks: your connection (the whole course from the ISP through modem, router, interface) and the CPU being overtaxed (firewall, antivirus, decoding, possibly including virtual memory use also).

So go to task manager and check the CPU-usage of the various tasks. Also check your Internet speed. Finally, find a laptop with a faster CPU and more RAM to compare with your PC and be sure it's not the connection.

If it turns out to be your PC, and there's no clear bottleneck like malware or P2P programs running in the background, you can try a clean install of the OS. This usually makes the system faster again, at least temporarily.

thanx for reply! I checked with my roomates` laptop and there seems to be everyhting fine. the online vid.are streaming without problem.
Next step I did check the task manager, but I didnt find any rpogram "suckking " the CPU. basicly I m taking care of my PC regularly, and I do all the necessary things to run the pc smooth. its working fine, fast and without any errors. I also have set the virtual mem. for 776. But, since I have 2HDD, Im not sure If I should set the virt.memory for both of them, or just the sysstem one?
Also, I dont like to install any not necessary software on my pc, so actually im not sure if maybe I m missing some software or maybe update?to run the videos smoothly.
I would like also to ask your opinion about....I s there a conncetion between computer performance on streaming videos???

Thanxs a lot!
