Online LDAP services

I have been unable to find internet mail providers offering LDAP servers along with IMAP accounts. Is there a reason for this? The main benefit of using IMAP has been the fact that you always see your same inbox (and other folders), regardless of the client or machine. Coupling this with an address server would complete the solution.. Multiple address books are terminally difficult to keep synched, but when using the Thunderbird Web Mail plug-in, you could keep /everything/ sorted (pop, imap, hotmail...) if only you had a personal internet based address server.
