Onkyo HT-S790 7.1 audio problem

Jun 6, 2009 4:30AM PDT

Very frustrated! Upgraded to 7.1 Onkyo from Sony 5.1 Niether recievers have HDMI but do have optical. On both recievers, only the surround speaker output is working. I eliminated possiblity speaker or speaker wire problem by taking turns swapping out all speaker connections and they all worked when connected to the surround output of both recievers. The 7.1 Onkyo would also not output from it's surround back jacks but, as with Sony, would only output to the one pair of surround speakers.
I have Direct TV reciever and a Toshiba DVD player that are both connected directly to TV via HDMI. Then from TV, only one optical cable to A/V reciever. We just use input selection of TV to change source.
The only thing I haven't tried yet is to hook directly from satellite reciever and DVD player to A/V reciever versus routing through TV. I have already been into setup menues of satellite reciever and TV to make sure of proper settings. Like I stated previously, I at least made sure that all speakers and speaker wiring does work. Could there be problem with the optical cable? I thought they either worked or didn't. Should I buy a new one?
BTW, I forgot to mention that the powered sub does also work. I just can't figure out problem with center, right & left front, and the surround back speakers (7.1 Onkyo).
I already called Bestbuy and Geeksquad would charge about $140 for service call.
Please help,
Thanks,
Steve

receiver settings for digital optical output
Jun 10, 2009 1:59AM PDT

With Onkyo you have to go in and assign the audio outputs specifically if I remember correctly from my own Onkyo A/V receiver. it might be a bit different than on the Sony, but YMMV. That's what's not set correctly if I get the gist of what you are saying. Review the user manual on assigning outputs as such. If that doesn't provide a solution, please re-post your exact model numbers for all your equipment involve line by line with your current cable connections. We could try to help from that point. Geek Squad is definitely overpriced Wink.

I don't know of HDTVs that are designed to pass along DD5.1/7.1 sound to a receiver that starts with an outside source like your DTV tuner/box. Provided you have the correct/numbers of inputs/outputs on the receiver (which model?) This is how you should try hooking it all up given you lack HDMI on the Onkyo (really? a newer 7.1 w/o HDMI?):

DirectTv box (HDMI out) -> (HDMI in) HDTV
Direct TV box (digital optical/digital coaxial out) -> Onkyo 7.1 receiver

Toshiba DVD (HDMI out) -> (HDMI in) HDTV
Toshiba DVD (digital optical/digital coaxial out) -> Onkyo 7.1 receiver

Keep in mind you have to make sure the Onkyo is set for the appropriate digital outputs. Look in the user guide for this. I can post a URL of the PDF if you can find yours Wink.

Pedro

bad luck
Jun 11, 2009 9:54AM PDT

Well, I have had to face the fact that I must have a defective receiver. I didn't mention earlier but, due to inexcusable piss poor packing job and incredibly brutal handling by UPS, the receiver was badly damaged. It did however seem to power up ok so I had hoped that it might still work. I still have been unable to get sound except through the pair of surround outputs. I confirmed this by using only the receiver's test tone. I tripled checked again all speakers and speaker wiring to once and for all eliminate them as being defective. But, get this for contingency plan; I got back on Ebay and won the exact same model receiver for $26 plus $15 shipping. It should arrive late this week or next. I exhorted the seller to please pack carefully! I have all speakers set up and mounted so hopefully, will have it going in short order. Fingers crossed!

ecost

Next time you're receiver shopping you might try ecost.com. It's a reputable site, and I've seen some fairly good deals vs what you might find on ebay. Glad you are getting a replacement Wink
