Onkyo HT-s5805 Ps4 setup help

Oct 24, 2018 3:01PM PDT

Hi,

I recently ordered this onkyo 5.1 dolby atmos surround sound system for ps4 and i'm wondering what would be the best settings to use for it? I know the ps4 doesn't officially support atmos but I've heard it still sounds good and the ps5 should be out soon so hopefully that supports it. Any tips on how to best set it up with ps4 would be appreciated, thanks.

I'm using it with a Sony xe90 4k uhd tv and a ps4 pro model if that helps, thanks.

The setup should be the same regardless of which UHDTV that you have. My choice is along the lines of the HDMI for video DIRECTLY to the UHDTV and optical to the receiver as noted in https://www.reddit.com/r/PS4Pro/comments/5i51pk/optical_audio_or_hdmi/

You can test if HDMI to the receiver and then the audio work is done there then off to the UHDTV through the receiver has ANY lag added. That is one of those hit and miss areas which needs testing. But if you want to avoid the testing then go with the herd with PS4 (pro or other) to the UHDTV HDMI port and optical to the receiver. If the receiver adds no lag then you can do that if you wish.

This area is full of choices. There has never been any "best" setup.

Ok thanks. I'm currently using my ps4 pro optical port for my siberia 800 headset so I was hoping that the surround sound system could just plug to my tv via optical cable or hdmi then any sytem like games consoles plugged to tv via hdmi would work on it.

Also I was wondering what sounds would be best to use in the ps4 menu to best take advantage of the system

You must decide.

You have to test and decide. Everyone's ears differ and there's only one way to settle it.

My choice would be to just go with HDMI to the receiver if that doesn't induce lag so I could switch from headphone to audio system with the least troubles.

Cool. I'll test it out on Friday when it arrives. Just in time for red dead redemption 2. I can't wait experience the wild west in 5.1 surround sound

hdr colour problems

I've just set this up with hdmi going from reciever to tv and ps4 going into receiver rather than tv using hdmi. I've been trying to get this to work but it seems like it turns hdr off when in game? I'm using game mode on receiver and it still switches off
