Ongoing Armada 7400 power on problems

Recently you diagnosed my problem very acuratley as bad motherboard. I purchased a used complete lower unit
less drives. After completing the installation of drives the unit powered up immediately with no apparent
glitches. Now after many successful bootups the unit does not always power on from the on off switch. Sometimes after being plugged in for a period of time and closing the lid and reopening the lid it then powers on. With the unit stone cold and plugged in the power light is not lit, however after being booted and used for a period of time and then shutting down the power light stays lit. And the power on button will cause unit to boot ok.
Today i could only get it to boot by inserting battery
[which is dead]. The drive made a lot of noise and the screen flashed a little during boot process.
This laptop has 366 processor Windows 2000 and ME
256 ram 10gig hd.
Power on off button always shuts unit down but does not always turn it on.
