Question

OneDrive update is required - real or bogus

Jul 29, 2017 10:58AM PDT

I grabbed this question from a Microsoft board, as I have the same question. It was unbelievably (and typically microsoftishly) answered quite a few times with what seemed like evasive, ambiguous, and sometimes shady answers.

Any input?

I started receiving a popup every time I turn the computer on stating that MS OneDrive needs to be updated. I always clicked cancel as it did not seem legit to me but I actually hit update once by mistake and upon doing so it opens up a browser and it tries to open/download OneDriveSetup.exe from https://oneclient.sfx.ms. I have screen shots from the original popup and the resulting popup if I hit update below. I tried searching for some information online but could not find anything. Is this legit or is it just some malware/Trojan?

Answer
Only if you use it.

Now while we could debate the "Microsoft answer" to this, if you don't use it, you don't need it and so it's not required.

But if it's installed you should let it update (from Microsoft.)

Your link seems to point to a legit msft site.

If your concerned this is malware make a full system backup.

Then allow the update.

After the update run some scans to see if anything shows.
