Resolved Question

OneDrive Files will not open in Word for editing

Jul 19, 2014 11:37PM PDT

I recently downloaded OneDrive onto my two computers.

Computer #1
Desktop 2007 Dell with Windows Vista, Word 2007, &
IE 9.0.8112.16421IC

Computer #2
Laptop Acer 2013 with Windows 8.1, Word 2010, &
IE 11.09

On my old desktop the files can be opened in Word for editing with no problem but on the newer laptop my files will not open in Word for editing, only in Word Online. Editing this way messes up the formatting. Can this problem be fixed?

I'm going with no.

Online editors suffer from a problem due to the idea of how Word rendered for years. Remember that how this works is on the web so I may not detail all the angles. So here's the short version.

To get a good WYSIWYG, Word queries the printer metrics, and the screen to make the on screen formatting. Since a web based editor can't do that since there are thousands of printers some generic guess is made and it's not good enough for many.

There's also an effort underway to fix print from the web issues but for now it's just an effort and not solved.

I'm sure there's an article about how to open Online Word docs with most versions of Word but I missed where you shared which Word(s) you have. Tell more and I'll look it up.

Answer
According to this article you should be able to edit.

But the article says you need to keep careful track of the version of the file. It also says you can set up a sync folder where if you modify the file on your PD (the client) it will sync the file on Onedrive.
