one time pc to pc transfer???

Feb 28, 2005 8:16AM PST

when my new pc comes i had planned on just installing one of the hdd from my old pc to the new one...problem is that the optical drives don't leave room for my ide hdd...could i just use a ethernet or crossover cable to transfer the files to the new computer??? will i have to setup a a full fledged lan to do this? this is a replacement computer so i won't be using it after the initial transfer...

thanks

Cables, CDs, ethernet, USB cables and more. Your link didn't work for me. Next time, a make and model plus the link may be a better idea.

this is the make and model...

D-Link Ethernet Switch (DSS-5+)
DLK DSS5PLUS

as i've never set up a lan before this seems to be a fairly straight foward solution. am i wrong?

thanks

May be overkill.

Here's why. With just two machines to network up, only a CROSSOVER CABLE is needed to connect 2 ethernet ready machines and that FAST method will schlep the files and optionally settings.

If you have the ethernet connection the cost can be 10 bucks or less.

well i tried doing this today with no luck...i'll try again tomorrow but if it doesn't work i guess i'll just temporarily disconnect one of my optical drives (which is using the ide cable) and install the old drive. them transfer the files and reinstall the optical...will this cause any problems in winxp?

Just to note.

"can i use the ethernet cable that connects to my cable modem?"
Your modem most likely uses a patch cable. The transfer requires a crossover cable. They're both cat-5 cables, just configured differently. You can pick up a crossover cable at any computer store, Best Buy, Comp USA, etc.
