One problem after another

Sep 28, 2008 2:18AM PDT

This started last week with not enough memory, But I'm going to skip over all that (because I posted about that already) and get to this probelm.

Yesterday, my internet explorer on my log in was working but it wasn't working on my daughter's. I decided to redownload the internet explorer, since I had to do this for my other daughter a few months back.

Well, after that, no one's internet was working. I told my husband to remove what I had done and he did a system restore to last week sometime.

This didn't work either.

He decided to reinstall windows.

This did not work either and since it wiped everything out, we can not go back to anything.

When we look into the Network Connections, there is nothing listed there and I believe there should be.

If anyone knows how I can get my computer to recognize my modem and network so we have an internet connection again, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks.

About that network connection.

Did you run the Network Connections Wizard to add a new connection?

Assuming the reinstall was proper, and all the drivers for the NIC, (Network Interface Card), motherboard, etc were installed properly, then adding a new network should do it.

You may want to head along to your Internet Service Provider's web site to see what their instructions are for setting up a brand new computer to work with their ISP service. That's what you have effectively, a brand new computer.

Yep, we tried that. He's in the process of removing important files so he can wipe the hard drive clean.

Then we will start all over. He thinks there may be a virus. If so, It's undetected, because I did an update and ran the anti virus.

I also told him, he may need to call ISP for settings. He says computer should automaically detect settings.

Thanks for all the help.

that, on a cable broadband ISP the computer should automatically detect the connection. But even so, it might be worth a check at the ISP web site.

If this is a clean reinstall, eg reformat the hard disk, install the operating system, then this should remove all viruses. However I suppose it could be a boot sector virus which can infect the BIOS, and any hidden partitions on the hard disk, especially if the reformat only reformats that main partition and leaves any hidden ones alone.

Google would help with Boot Sector Virus.
