One Possible solution to home network connection problems...

Apr 3, 2005 3:44PM PDT

I've had limited success with exchanging info (files, etc) between shared folders on my 3 computer network (one desktop with ethernet and 2 wireless connections through my wireless router.) Sometimes I could "see" the other computers on my network, but could NOT access the files in the shared folders. I've been trying to correct this problem for over 3 months. As per other users posting similar problems on this board, I always had full internet access from any of my computers through the router.

Today I was at my desktop where the wireless router is. I noticed that I only had a 10Mbps ethernet signal even though my computer has a 100Mbps rating. Figuring that maybe my ethernet cable might be loose, I pulled out all ethernet cables from the router (both in cables and out cables.) I then reseated all the cables to my router and I immediately got a 100Mbps signal from the router to my desktop. When I did this reseating, all 3 computer were on along with power to the router and modem.

I then clicked on my Network Places (Start Menu) and all my shared places from my ohter computer popped up for the first time. I clicked on one of the shared places and all the files in it were available. I then checked the other computers in the house with similar results. I even was able to install 2 different network printers that can now be accessed by any of my computers.

Once again, all I did was reseat the cords coming in and out of the router. It's been 24 hours now from the time I did this and the network continues to hum ROCK SOLID. Perhaps this solution might help someone else get their network functioning. It certainly did mine. Sorry about the long-winded message, but I wanted to be very clear about what my problem was and what I did to correct it.

sometimes it is the simplest thing... like the standard joke about the refrigerator repairman's first question - "Is it plugged in?"
