General discussion

one of computer disappeared from the LAN

Oct 7, 2004 8:19PM PDT

i have a 5-computer network, 2 desktops, 1 notebook running windows xp ( home edition) sp1 and 2 old computers running on windows 98se. a week ago, one of the computers running on windows 98se became inaccessible on the local area network, altho it remains connected to the internet. i have a broadband connection (adsl).

i have already done all the usual windows network troubleshooting procedure, including running the netsetup again, to no avail. i've also checked the firewall settings (norton internet security), configured ethernet card, even shifted the ethernet card to another pci slot, all to no avail.

what could possibly be the problem? it's so inconvenient that i can no longer share files & printers between this one computer and all the other computers.

all the other computers on the network are accessible to and from each other.

help!!!

1. You have a firewall installed. Don't expect me to tell you how to fix that. I have to uninstall such daily as they too often are the reason. Why uninstall? The disable function doesn't work.

2. A machine is not seen unless it shares or under a very special setp which I do not endorse or will share.

3. You didn't tell if you could ping it.

i have norton internet security firewall on all the 5 computers. the same computer on which i lost local area network connectivity previously worked with the current firewall setting.

pinging the computer (10.0.0.152)on the lan from one of my other computers (10.0.0.151) gets the following result:

pinging 10.0.0.152 with 32 bytes of data
request timed out 4x
pinging statistivcs from 10.0.0.152
packets sent=4 received = 0 lost=4 100% loss

i have a thomson 4 port modem router: speedtouch 510.

Now you found you have a network problem.

I've shared the firewall issue, but you didn't tell if you uninstall it to see if that is the issue.

Have fun,

sorry, i pinged another computer w/c is not on.

ping result is:

pinging 10.0.0.154 with 32 bytes of data

reply from 10.0.0.154: bytes=32 time 1ms ttl=128 (4x)

ping statistics for 10.0.0.154:
packets sent=4, received=4, lost=0 <0 loss>
approximate round trip times in milisecs:
minimum=0ms, maximum=0ms, average=0ms

what could possibly be the problem?

Sorry,

"w/c" doesn't ring a bell with me.

As it stands the machine that can't be pinged is likely firewalled off or has a dead nic or someone installed a driver from microsoft.

If you want to keep a firewall installed on the failed machine and troubleshoot the issue, I can't help.

Re: clarification re computer with ip address 10.0.0.152
Oct 10, 2004 2:14AM PDT

sorry again, the computer 10.0.0.152 w/c i pinged previously is not turned on. it is another computer on my network & one i don't have any problem with. it is configured w/ a firewall & has both lan & internet connectivity.

i rechecked the ip address of the computer that lost accesibility on the lan. this computer's ip address is 10.0.0.154. that was the ping result that i sent in my third posting.

no, i'm not asking for firewall troubleshooting.

thanks!

And I'm asking...
Oct 10, 2004 2:21AM PDT

That's a LAN that is not directly exposed to the internet so for troubleshooting an apparent offline machine I start with this tool:

KNOPPIX from http://tips.oncomputers.info/archives2004/0401/2004-Jan-11.htm

This stops any futzing with the installed OS and lets me know if there is a hardware issue.

In closing, if it is the machine's installed OS or firewall I uninstall the firewall since I've run into too many that have failed. You didn't tell if you did this step.

Just a simple thought..

May be someone has disable print and file sharing? so you didn't have a shared folder ...?

Remove and reinstall your NIC (from control panel, networking area..)

Try to replaced the NIC -- just to make sure,,,

Note: with bad NIC you might still be able to browse the internet but Not sharing files or vice versa...
