If you know for a "fact" the IDE channel is gone or not trustworthy, get an IDE card to replace the done-in IDE channel(s). You're just not going to get things working unless some s/w is at fault, thus if h/w problem, the above apples or install another mtrbd.. You should also consider a larger power supply as if and when you get to add the other devices, they'll need *stable* power. Because for however reason tthe IDE ch. was hosed it maybe abbriuted to a power issue. You didn't mention how old your system was but if older than 2yrs., about that time a "capacitor" problem was becoming common, check for bulging, blown, or leaky caps on mtrbd..
