You'll need a full DVD with your choice and then treat it like a clean install. Hopefully the maker will tell you all 20 drivers and apps you need to get the laptop functioning again.

Bob
Hmm, what do you mean 'the maker' ? and 'treat it like a clean install' ?
See, the most important reasons I want vista is because I have an external hard drive that is programmed only to work on XP and Vista... AND I heard you can't have desktop wallpapers on 7.. so a real dealbreaker for me!
An external hard drive that only works on XP and Vista? Not heard of that one. My externals work with all 3 OSes.
BTW, I have a lovely Desktop Wallpaper on my Win 7 system.
Mark
So you can find an image on the internet and just set it as your desktop background?
And my hard drive is a 320 GB HP Simplesave, I am told it won't work on 7.
See, if only my hard drive would work on 7, and if I really can have my own wallpaper then I would be issue-free with Windows 7! ![]()
this one?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Simple-Save-Portable-320gb-Inch/dp/B002L09HF6
If so, I see it says;
"OS Required: Microsoft Windows 7, Microsoft Windows Vista / XP
Microsoft Certification: Compatible with Windows 7"
Who told you it won't work on Win 7?
I've not checked before on my Win 7, but I have just found an image on the internet and when I right clicked it I saw, "Set as Desktop Background".
So, all sorted then?
Mark
Yes, that is the one.
And if my hard drive would work on Windows 7, And I can really have my own desktop background, then Windows 7 would be just fine. But, I don't feel comfortable plugging my hard drive into a Windows 7 computer because I have a fear it might screw things up... because I was told it was programmed only for XP and Vista... :\
I'll leave it to Bob to explain "maker" and "clean install". So my remarks:
I've never seen an external drive that is programmed.
I've never seen a drive that works on XP and Vista not to work on Windows 7.
http://www.google.com/search?q=windows+7+wallpaper gives so much hits that I doubt if you've heard it right.
Kees
But can I have my own desktop background? Like these:
If not, that would be an instant throw off to 7. :\
And, my external hard drive once had an issue and had to be fixed, and the guy who fixed it only programmed it to work for XP and Vista. See, I do not know if it actually don't work on Windows 7, because the hard drive was given back to me just yesterday, and I haven't even tested it on XP or Vista... because IF my XP desktop computer and Vista Laptop have viruses they will spread to my hard drive... Therefore, I was going to get a new laptop, it being Windows 7; I don't know if that is cool for me..
(Beautiful photo! And that is exactly what I mean.
)
The issue my hard drive had was said to be a motor issue, i'm not the most sure about it. And I really don't think my computers have viruses... I know the XP don't, it had a Destructive System Recovery yesterday... my laptop I doubt has a virus but its so slow theres really no hope in downloading any virus blocking program. If my hard drive is 'incompatible' with Windows 7, if I plug it in a Windows 7 computer, will that damage or corrupt anything on my external hard drive?
Will I be able to set my own wallpaper; just like you did; in any version of 7? the OS of the laptop I am wanting reads as "Genuine Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit"
I can only guess you read something about Windows 7 Basic.
I'm using Win 7 Ultimate.
And Bob raises an interesting point. Windows 7 Basic (Starter Edition) may not allow setting of wallpaper. But I am unsure why anyone would want to get that version.
Mark
Oh? So if I get that Windows 7 Home Premium laptop; can my desktop look exactly as yours did when you set that beautiful image as your wallpaper? ![]()
And what does Windows 7 Ultimate offer that Premium does not?
Since there is no supported method to install Vista with 7 in place, you start fresh. Make the HDD blank, boot your OS CD and install the OS and the 20 or so apps and drivers the maker of the laptop told you to install.
No one knows this install in a step by step form. I've seen guides but I fear there is something amiss here.
For example Windows 7 home through ultimate allows wallpapers. Windows 7 Basic has a way around that but your post is omitting details. So your replies may miss a point or two.
Bob
*sigh* If I do use that method you stated (Make the HDD blank, boot your OS CD and install the OS and the 20 or so
apps and drivers the maker of the laptop told you to install.) Will the Windows 7 laptop be just like a Vista laptop? I would just buy a Vista laptop online, but the Windows 7 computer I found has 500GB hard drive and 4GB RAM...
It would not be just like a Vista laptop. It would be a Vista laptop.
But if I were you, I really shouldn't do it. Practically everybody likes Windows 7 better than Vista. And it's a lot of work, it costs a lot of money, and it's not sure it works.
Kees
Alright, I think I get the main concept here. Windows 7 Home Premium will allow custom desktop wallpapers; just as MarkFlax shown (right?) if so, issue resolved!
And I suppose I will get the issue resolved of my external hard drive not being compatible with Windows 7.
And on Windows 7, can I install Windows Movie Maker 6.0 (the one for Vista) ?
While I can't write if you can do this, I think you need to read the next link.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/35151-windows-movie-maker-6-0-install-windows-7-a.html
Oh God, this is just ridiculous. All the things I have to do for a Win7 computer... I'll just buy a Vista. Thanks everyone!
"Ballmer loves you."
I'm typing from my 7 laptop and frankly I was glad last month when our office had a going away party for the last Vista machine at the office. Yup, we'll find any excuse for cake.
Bob
When Vista was launched it seemed that most people hated it. I bought two new pc's for home use which had Vista pre-installed and personally I found it very easy to get on with. My pc at work is Windows 7, others in the office have either 7 or Vista and to be honest after regularly flitting between the two systems I don't really see a huge difference between them. I certainly have no plans to update my home machines.
When Vista was launched there was an outcry from XP users who did not want to change. It seems odd now that someone wants to revert from 7 to Vista!!
