Resolved Question

Older TV TH L 42E5Z Connecting Comp via HDMI

Jan 19, 2015 2:54PM PST

HDMi is not shown as an option when connecting computers via the HDMi inputs.

This model has 4 HDMi inputs the user guide indicates to view inputs select AV the available inputs displayed will depend on hardware that is connected to the TV I have a DVD and Computers connected to HDMi1 & HDMi2 when i select AV from the TV or the remote all I see are AV1/DVD, TV & SD Card/USB the HDMi1 & 2 are not visible to be selected.

I collaborated with my neighbour who has 2 Sony TV's and connecting the same computers using the same HDMi cables the computers are displayed and I can switch between them.

I have also on at least 3 occasions connected my computer via HDMi cable to Panasonic TV's when staying at Motels.

I am lost if anyone has any thoughts as to what may be wrong please let me know. I am sure it is not the HDMi cables as they work with all other TV's I have connected to except the one own!

Clarification Request
How many PCs have you tried?
Jan 19, 2015 3:02PM PST

Also, do these PCs work with other HDTVs?

I find many are not able to set up the PC.

Re how many PC's have I tried

I have tried 3 Laptops and all of these can be connected to other brands of HDTV's including Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, Phillips etc. The computers are less than 3 years old i.e. Toshiba Satellite, Lenovo Yoga, HP Notebook, these notebooks connect to both my neighbours SONY TVs with HDMi, the Lenovo that I take with me on the road trips and use connect to TV's at my motel or other accommodation using an HDMi cable; No issue's! I am starting to think it is just this TV of mine! Hoping a subscriber with the same model TV see's my post and confirms otherwise.

PS all the notebooks run Win 8.1

Re Resolution Settings
Jan 20, 2015 3:02PM PST

Thanks Bob I had not thought it would be necessary due to the ability to connect my computers to other TV's via HDMi including other Panasonic models, I will take a look at these settings when I return to the nest tomorrow! Thanks also for the link to the Manual.

Will post an update once checked.

Hi again Bob apologise for delay in responding to your suggestion had another Tecko issue to sort. As far as we can tell the notebook is automatically adjusting to the correct HDTV the resolution settings are comparable to my neighbours Notebooks and neither of these (Lenovo Think Pad & Toshiba Satellite) will connect via HDMi to my Panasonic, we also tested on another friends TV who had a 55" and 32" Panasonic HDTV and my notebook and the other 2 mentioned above all connected to these 2 TV,s via HDMi.

Think I will try and contact Panasonic, that will be interesting.

Thanks and appreciate your feedback

That's bad news.

If multiple laptops don't connect I worry it's some HDMI HDCP issue. You can find web pages about how HDCP versions can wipe out your acquired gear. For example HDCP 2.2 has arrived and some are reporting exactly what was noted by CNET at http://www.cnet.com/news/hdcp-2-2-what-you-need-to-know/

"HDCP 2.2 is the next generation of copy protection for the 4K era, and it likely won't work with any of your current gear. Here's what you need to know."

So you have an older set so new gear may indeed be DOA.

Not so Bad News

That is scary stuff for the future though!

Neighbour (he's good) had a 3rd TV a Panasonic TH-L32XM5Z we both purchased our Panasonic TV's about 2 years ago in preparation for the 'Go Digital' here in NZ, we have tested the computers via HDMi on this TV this morning, this one only has 2 HDMi inputs and they all work fine so it is looking like the problem is isolated to the TH-L42E5Z; still gonna get in touch with Panasonic and also test some other devices over the weekend.

Something I should have noted earlier.

Ask about all reset methods. Some models need reset, some need a firmware update but the missing INPUTS when you hit the input button is not good. I didn't find a manual so I can't see if pressing AV is the right button as well as how to reset it.

Positive feedback from Reseller
Jan 23, 2015 3:17PM PST

Made contact with the reseller today (not Panasonic yet), the reseller also organised the installation and with all the facts provided they have agreed to review the setup next week the thinking is the settings are incorrect as we also established we are unable to access a local product called 'Freeview' which is pretty standard on all this vintage TV. I have been reluctant to take the TV off the wall mount so this is a good result.

Really appreciate your contribution and feedback hopefully will get some closure early next week!!!!

Problem Resolved
Jan 27, 2015 12:04AM PST

The technician resolved the issues maybe because I am not the brightest spark in the room when it comes to technology it was a blur the layman term was that the original set was not completed correctly and several features namely 'Freeview' AV Setup were hidden therefore it was never going be easy! It was only from discussions with peers and my neighbour I realised we were being deprived. Thanks again for your interest and contribution
