Question

Old XP computer expired, need wifi security for Netflix.

Apr 23, 2014 8:28AM PDT

I have a nice 2002 Sony Vaio desktop but can't afford to upgrade computer at present. AT&T includes free wifi, but the NVG510 router/modem only supports WEP, and not WPA2 security. I have two streaming media players for my two standard tvs for Netflix, but my concern is how to beef up wifi security without the computer? Also, do I still need the TP-link wireless adapter? Research has been confusing. Thanks everyone!

Answer
So why WiFi at all?

We know that WPA, WPA2 is now crackable depending on some factors. The fastest WPA2 crack is on a cloud computer at about 3 to 4 hours for 25 or less bucks.

What made you think WiFi is secure?

Replace the router maybe the way to go. It seems to be the bottleneck here, but having all older equipment etc., just makes you rethink that sooner or later, you have to overhaul the whole setup. AT&T aside, if they provide anything then let that be your guide on the direction you need to take. Anything newer or latest should have the best security at current levels or what can be provided within cost constraints. If you settle for the cheapest route, security or not, then review where you live and what you may expect as security risks. The latest wifi adapter isn't that expensive if you have to replace it.
