OLD pc...turned into iTunes front end, but....

Mar 10, 2010 4:08PM PST

The idea of reusing old pc's as media servers (and the remote control app for itunes using my iphone) intrigued me enough to resurrect an old pc running windows 2000...after going thru the pains of getting updates for hardware and software ,including windows 2000 service pack 4, I had read that iTunes version 7.3.2 should work OK with this OS and service pack 4. It does. However, it doesn't seem to want to recognize my iphone 3G....it tells me I need to install a certain file, and something about apple mobile or remote program something or other....is my dream of wirelessly controlling my itunes playlists in the bedroom, using this 2nd pc I put together as a '24/7, always on' music server dead in the water?

ps- I tried installing the latest version of itunes , but it tells me I would need XP and service pack 2. BOO.

"a certain file"
"something about apple mobile"
"remote program something or other"
Why not install those?

And, of course, you can always buy install a new OS. The price of that is comparable with the electricity costs of running a pc 24/7, so money can't be an objection for you, I'd say.

well, I'm not exactly sure what the 'apple mobile program' is!...the file, I can probably find ...but what I gather is that this older version of iTunes may not support the iphone, not sure.

Yea, the electricity used is somethin' I don't know if I'll like or not...I'd imagine that with the pc in sleep mode or whatever when iTunes isn't in use, it wouldn't be that bad...the other option you mentioned, a new OS, I had considered that...windows 7 can be had for about $100, but I'd still want the pc (which is in another room and is transmitting the music wirelessly from yet another device, the USB drive of a media player) on 24/7 to bring up tunes at a whim, without having to go boot up the pc Happy.
