So today I turned my computer on and I get a grey screen with a folder then a ?

Sorry new to Mac world I have been a PC user but I am making a switch.

was there any reason for using an obsolete computer to make the switch from windows?

It is limited in the version of OS X that it can run,
Software is no longer being written for it.
Many of the updates to the apps that were originally installed on it, need an Intel processor.

As a fun project, especially if you enjoy soldering, it is a fine machine
