Old laptop convert to chromebook

Aug 4, 2016 8:44AM PDT

I have converted an old Gateway laptop to a chromebook. All works well except the wifi. It was working when it was running Microsoft Vista. I converted it and it works fine if I plug into the internet, but no wifi is even detected.
I tried a new wifi USB plug in device but the wifi is still not recognized.
Any thoughts?

Can you share details?

I can run Chrome X86 on a few machines here and have a few WiFi dongles but you left out all details so I can't check to see if I have a similar setup.

So my advice is to keep trying dongles.

Here are some specs:
Gateway laptop: Model M-6750
Was running Microsoft Vista home premium and wifi was working before conversion.
Latest version of cloudready chromium was used to convert.
I purchased a SeoJack AC600 wifi dual band USB adapter to try to fix wifi issue.
Again, it works great if I plug it in to the internet.

I don't have either of those.

I'm going to update to a new Chromium build. I'll go get today's x64 version from
http://arnoldthebat.co.uk/wordpress/chromium-os/

After I set that up for USB boot I'll test on what laptops I can find around the office with these USB WiFi adapters.
1. Alfa AWUS036H
2. Etekcity SI-7200ND

Be back later. Downloading now.

Unfortunately I can't find a way to disable this laptop's WiFi so all I can report is it worked on this model. Will snag another laptop later.

I tried the 64 bit version. No luck.
I am going to root around on the cloudready site and see what I can find.

Today I get to try another machine.

I have this Intel NUC but it has onboard WiFi and Bluetooth so here's hoping I can disable that to test with the external WiFi sticks I have.

Later.

new build
Aug 8, 2016 12:05PM PDT

Just got in touch with cloudready and there is a brand new beta build that they recommended to me. It has better support for wi-fi. I'll let you know.

Finally got around to testing.

Etekcity SI-7200ND works

My EDUP EP- MS1559 did not work.

This Intel NUC also has onboard WiFi which also works. Tricky to test these things.
