Old keyboard for new one?

Aug 7, 2007 1:19PM PDT

As we all know, the new iMacs just came out today along with iWork and iLife '08 and especially this: the new keyboards.

I have an old iMac G4. I have the original keyboard that most iMac users have come to know, and have found a problem with it. Somehow, the keyboard's USB cable was damaged, denting the metal connector at the end. This created two problems for me; metal shows when the keyboard is plugged in and the plastics (where the good old Apple and USB icon are) fall off no matter what and this proves to be a hazard for fires and stuff, no matter how unlikely.

Anyway, the USB cord does not connect properly, and I need a replacement. The old keyboards are completely wiped out from Apple's online store, save the refurbished wireless keyboard that I don't want. I have no need for wireless because the iMac is on a small desk and the cable is longer than necessary.

iMac G4 warranty is out the window, so I probably won't be able to switch it for free. I'm not sure if the could replace the cord inside or anything either. But since they don't have the old ones for sale OFFICIALLY (the new iMacs came out today when I was at my Apple Store, and they had all the yesterday stuff, no new stuff), I may just get a free, new one. If not free, I still get the flat keyboard.

Who thinks that if the Apple Stores still have some, I could possibly switch it out for a better and good conditioned old one?

About fire and USB.

Sorry but the USB spec has a current limit and over what must be a million ports I've seen over the years, not one fire.

-> Sorry but I think you don't have much to worry about here.

As to the replacement keyboard I'm a little shocked that you have been hit by one as you go shopping. I see Mac compatible keyboards by the boatload. Are you in some ice cave on the 90th parallel?

No, I just like Apple products.

I use other products not made by Apple, but I prefer Apple stuff.

Incase is great though.

I can't help it if I get worried over the cable. Last time I touched metal on a live current, my hand was electrocuted by a small amount. My whole left hand was shaking for an hour. And I'm talking about a small amount of metal, not like a huge conductor.

I like the Apple keyboard that I have, and I was at the Apple Store at the exact same time as Steve announced the new releases. The Apple Store I was at still had all the old stuff. Most of them or many of them may have the new iMacs and keyboards now, but I don't think that they'd get rid of their old stuff. They'd probably sell it for less, and I could just swap it out.

I really don't care for other keyboards, I'm just interested in swapping out the one I have.
