Old HDD to an external harddrive

by JeffB28 / June 20, 2012 4:47 PM PDT

I am replacing and old computer that had a celeron 1100 prosessor with a HP Compaq 7800 that is used and has had the operating system removed which I will replace with my XP Home OS.I recently had the hard drive in the old unit cloned from the original 20 HDD to a 250 IDE hard drive which now has 94% space remaining in it, can I install that hard drive into an external hard drive to preserve my old data? The new computer is a SATA drive.

Yes, that is very well possible.

But an external isn't really suitable for "preserving" data. They fail too often. But it's nice for an extra backup and to copy data somewhere else.

Since I have no prior experience with an external hard drive how does one access the old files once it is hooked up and what can I do to add to them such as "My Pictures" and my Quicken banking.

It will get a drive letter. Then you can access it in My Computer or Windows Explorer and copy/paste or drag and drop everything you with to every place you wish. Or you can browse to it if you do some File>Import in an application program.

Meet the drop-resistant Moto Z2 Force

The Moto Z2 Force is really thin, with a fast processor and great battery life. It can survive drops without shattering.
