Question

Old Hard drive not working

May 6, 2019 1:10PM PDT

I just got my hard drive enclosure and I popped the drive in, but I can't find the drive on my PC. It's not making a loud screeching noise like all these videos u keep finding say. It sounds completely normal.
Also everything I found online so far hasn't help so I'm here now.

try disk management

open disk management and see if it shows there without a drive letter. if so, assign a drive letter.

if not there

try the drive on another computer. also check the enclosure and make sure it is properly installed. since it does not show in disk management then there is something wrong with the enclosure, the connections or the drive.

To use their power adapter and test it on another PC. The story is typical of a failing case or drive but doesn't tell us where the issue is here.

Try one thing. Turn off power saving in your PC like this for the USB ports.
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/73187-turn-off-usb-selective-suspend-windows-10-a.html

The story above is typical for old HDD issues. The owner will claim there is nothing wrong with the drive and we'll remove the HDD to see if it works in a common desktop. We rarely do that anymore if the owner is the type that seems combative. For those we just send them over to drivesavers.com or one of those 300 buck data recovery stores.

I'll try
May 6, 2019 5:59PM PDT

I'll have to give it a try but I am pretty sure that there is nothing wrong with the drive but I could be wrong. Any other suggestions?

Just work it like other techs.

The drive is tested in the office or repair shop's desktop.
Try all USB ports. For desktops only use the rear motherboard ports.
