Hi, DaveK,

IMO, who is #1 has been controversial from the get-go, long before the BCS. There has always been some controversy with coaches and sportwriters polls as they are more familiar with the teams in their areas, and, human nature being what it is, favor their conferences.

What the BCS did was foul up the bowl selection process.

Pre-season picks are fine, but to declare teams as playing for forst place in one post season bowl does not always determine who is best (maybe who is luckiest to have no injuries to key plaers).

I don't see a team like OK, who had the 11th toughest schedule and did not win their conference being considered #1 as opposed to a team like LSU who had the tougher schedule.

IMO, to elongate the college season with playoffs has it's shortcomings, especially when it comes to the status of physical health of the players, which involves a strong element of luck. No doubt TV money moves some to favor a longer season.

The bowl winners over the holdidays should be the best indicators of standings.

In the end, the resuts are bragging rights, alumni mney, and recruiting advantages.

Hi, Angeline.

I think they need to go back to considering margin of victory, but with limits (to prevent running up the score). Had K State won by a point, three, or even a TD I wouldn't feel the end result so bogus. But they absolutely dominated the game in every stage. Perhaps the margin of victory should be considered, but with a 21 or 28 point maximum (IOW, winning by 55, as OU did to Texas A&M this year, counts no more than winning by 21 or 2Cool.

While I'm here...

This is my opinion. The NCAA has yet to reply to me, but I still hope they'll consider it.

Step 1: NCAA Division 1 football needs to reform into 8 major conferences. Each conference will have 12 teams, each with 2 divisions of 6 teams, for a total of 96 teams eligible to compete for the national title.

Step 2: All teams will play 5 games against division foes, 4 against opposing division teams, and 2 interconference games. All 96 teams will play the same number of games.

Step 3: All division champions will play each other for the conference championships. There will be 8 conference champions who will move on to the national title playoffs. What this guarantees is that only conference champs get to play for the title.

Step 4: Bowl games. One of the biggest obstacles to a playoff system has been the loss of the major bowl games. No need! In this system, there are 7 major bowl games that rotate every year. Guaranteed then, that the Rose Bowl will host the chamionship game every 7 years, as will the Sugar, Orange, Fiesta, and 3 other major bowls. The smaller bowls will also continue, hosting teams that did not win their conferences but still had good seasons.

The playoff seedings will be drawn every year, so they will be different each time.

Possible playoff teams from this year would have been:

Kansas State
USC
LSU
Michigan
Miami (FL)
Southern Miss
Miami (OH)
Utah

All conference champs get to play in a playoff series to determine who is the champion. No polls, no computers, decided on the field, as it should be.

Of course, you can still have your polls. They'll just continue to be as useless as they ever have been.

Happy
Dino

IMO, your suggestions have merit!

The various bowl sponsors might agree as it would give their bowls prominence every few years. The downside is they might not like the "off" years. TV has pretty well setlted which are the prime bowls, so some might object.

Hi, Dino.

The problem with the payoff system is that in football (unlike basketball), you can't really play more than a game a week, so the length of the playoffs would both increase the risk of injury and seriously disrupt the final exam schedules for those who really are student athletes. I think they need to tweak the BCS system some, and then add a final playoff between the two top-rated teams after the bowls. In many years that would be unnecessary, but this year it's required t settle who's the champ. Ideally, you'd only have the final playoff when needed, but that would be a logistical nightmare.

Does the debate over the need to accurately determine the college that should
Dec 9, 2003 11:36PM PST

be given the #1 title in football debate the wrong problem?

Is the problem who should be national champs? or is the problem the extreme importance that college football to the universities had become. A winning coach is much more essential to the success of a university now than a talented teaching staff.

Of course the public contributes to this. Or rather, this is so the public will contribute more, as in personal donations to the winning in sports college.

And old arguement, rehashed more than once, but I couldn't resist it in terms of the debate about how to fix the national title award.
