Okay, I Give Up

WindowsUpdate tells me that WMP9 is compatible with ME. Can I believe this?
They also said IE6 was, but I turned out to be one of the lucky few on that deal.

One. I would find it hard to believe that it was NOT compatible. Also

I do not understand your remark about IE6. That is certainly compatible.

This writer will ***-u-me that there is no Operator Error.

IE 6 made some new demands on video drivers. If you owned a S3 Virge onboard video system and were using some 1996 era video drivers, IE 6 could make a royal mess of Windows ME.

But it is entirely "correct" that IE 6 is compatible with Microsoft Windows ME. Its the other pieces that can cause issues...

Yes, but...

"They also said IE6 was, but I turned out to be one of the lucky few on that deal."

That's the answer in disguise. While WMP9 is compatible with Windows ME, it may not like your CDRW drive, sound card or video drivers or something else.

I know of no test to see if you'll have an issue.

I do use the WMP removal technique at http://www.nwlink.com/~zachd/pss/pss.html if need be to go back...

...and speaking of sound, WindowsUpdate has an updated sound driver to offer me, but I would rather get one from the ESS website. I cannot find an ESS 5.12.01.2042 there. My Google just had me going in circles with other versions. Any idea where else I can look?

I found it at Dell.

Let me sound off on that one!

My best advice is to NEVER let Microsoft Update update drivers. There are no less than a handful of ESS sound systems and Microsoft doesn't know what you have.

Don't upgrade drivers unless you know why. And certainly not what Microsoft offers.

That is why I did not use WindowsUpdate. Dell knows what I have and they had an updated one.
Now if I could just figure out where the uninstall is located for WMP7, maybe I could try installing 9. Is it disguised in Add/Remove under some other alias? I am beginning to think this whole thing is NOT worth it just to hear midi sound on a few webpages.

Your choice on that. Regard midi on pages and WMP 7.

The WMP Mini-Faq was created way back in the pre-WMP 9 days. The FAQ is very useful, but some want the FAQ to be "for WMP 6.4 10.92.0012" which is not going to happen.

I have used the method noted on many machines regardless of the (Windows) OS and WMP version.

Did you see if that worked?

WMP Mini FAQ's: Two Questions
Feb 21, 2004 11:32PM PST

There is a lot to comprehend there. It would be much easier if I were getting error messages that had a specific fix. To answer your question: Not exactly. Troubleshooting via Microsoft's suggestions did not yield any fantastic results either.
Am I correct in interpreting the Mini FAQ to say that I should just install 9 over 7, rather than trying to remove 7 first? Yeah, I know, if my System Restore works, I'll be okay, but I'd just like to do this as cleanly as possible.
Second question: I noticed that Windows had updated codecs for v.9. If 9 installs successfully, should I go back and fetch the codecs?

1. Am I correct in interpreting the Mini FAQ to say that I should just install 9 over 7, rather than trying to remove 7 first? Yeah, I know, if my System Restore works, I'll be okay, but I'd just like to do this as cleanly as possible.

I never tried that. Since installing WMP 9 with some prior version is what Microsoft expects people to do as the HINT is there is no add/remove most of the time for WMP, plus I can always fix it later, I just install and move on. There are a few people that want a really clean OS without any extra file or such, but that is not possible and keep the hours and DOLLARS low in the service area. So "Tech" just installs over the top and moves on.

2. Second question: I noticed that Windows had updated codecs for v.9. If 9 installs successfully, should I go back and fetch the codecs?

Yes. In fact, I just install these on non-WMP 9 boxes without ill effects to let the prior versions play most WMP 9 encoded files.
