Ok, How do I enable my external harddrive thru the USB?

I bought this wonderful external harddrive from WD in 2008 and I know it works. I have a brand new Dell with Windows 7. When I first got it I had the firmware to detect the USB, but I couldn't keep it because it was too expensive. How can I tell if the rest of my USB's are installed? In one place it said that the front USB was not installed? In PC World this issue, they said that Dell and HP were the worst for forgeting to install drivers. So does anyone have instructions for this, I can remember going thru device manager when I had my old computer, but that was in 2008 and I've been very sick and going thru a divorce so ya know. I don't need the backup, I just need to know how to tell if all my USB's are installed and if so, how do I get my external harddrive connected to one of them because in Device Manager it says that they are there?? So Confusing.

If that external drive works on another PC, it should work with any PC, including yours. Nothing special to do. Just connect it and use it.

Some notes:
1. Be sure it works NOW at another PC. It's not relevant that it worked YESTERDAY, because it can be broken down just now.
2. If it doesn't work ONLY at your new PC, things that can be wrong are:
- Not enough power on your USB. Remedy: use an externally powered drive or an externally powered hub or an Y-cable to connect it to 2 USB-ports.
- Bad USB-port. Remedy: try another one. Backside USB-ports might be better than front-side.
- Not the right drivers installed (although that should be OK on a new PC). Looking in Device Manager and checking with a USB-stick and another external drive might help diagnose this. A USB-stick doesn't have power issues and should always work.

How to use Device Manager

Assuming that you are asking for instructions on how to check it in "Disk Management", which is a part of "Computer Management" (Disk Manager is something different. You use that to make sure that all your drivers are installed properly),
follow these steps:

Right-click the "Computer" icon (in Windows XP, it used to be called "My Computer).
Choose "Manage".
Click on "Disk Management".

You can now see all of your drives, including your external hard drive.

If the external hard drive has a drive letter, like the other drives do, then it is working.

If it doesn't have a drive letter, Right-click on the name of the external hard drive.
Choose "Change Drive Letter and Paths".
Click on the "Add" button to add a drive letter.
On "Assign the following drive letter" you can either leave it with the letter it already has showing,
or you can change it to any available letter.
(See the note below.)

Click the "OK" button.


NOTE:
If you would like to assign it a letter that would be its own each time you plug it in, give it its own unique letter, so that letter would be assigned to nothing but that particular device.
For example, I have a flash drive that I have assigned letter Z, a printer that is assigned to letter Y, another flash drive that I assigned to X, and an external hard drive that I have partitioned into 3 partitions, using letters U, V, and W.
In addition, I have assigned them each the same letters on all of my computers, so it is not confusing when I use them on another computer.

If it doesn't show up in Disk Management, you can't do anything with it in that program; so you can't partition it either.
