Dec 17, 2003 3:50AM PST

my medion (md8000 - 2600 xp) won't stabilize. it continulally reboots for no apparent reason. medion helpline folks suggest i use their recovery disk to eliminate a software issue.
WHOA! i got stuff on the hd. they suggest i take out the hd and stick it in another computer to get the stuff i need then reformat with their disk. well...i have only an old 500 amd mutt running 98. i stuck in the medion hd (seagate 80)... paying attention to slave master settings and cmos. post finds the slave (medion disk) but doesn't list it in "my computer". what am i doing wrong??
help mr. wizard...

Hard disks tend to erase themselves or vanish. Put your stuff on CDR or what have you.

NTFS

XP uses another filesystem (NTFS) than Win98 (FAT 32), so you can't read the one from the other normally. You can download some NTFS-reader, which might enable you to read the files on the old computer, I think.
But buying a CD-writer and using that to backup your data on a regular basis is a much, much, much better solution. The only problem might be that your system isn't stable enough to do it at the moment. Which could be a rather big problem.

Some questions.
- Are you sure it's a software issue? How come?
- Did you make a restore point in XP to which you can go back?
- Does the restore CD work on a new empty harddisk on your XP-computer (leave the data on the old, and copy it afterwards on your recovered XP machine)? Some restore CD's nowadays get additional data from a hidden partition on the hd, so they won't work on a new one.

Not having a backup can be an awesome problem, as you see.

NOPE...NOT SURE IT IS A SOFTWARE ISSUE, BUT MEDION WANTS TO RULE IT OUT BEFORE THEY LOOK IT OVER.
AS FAR AS A RESTORE POINT, I WORE OUT "GO BACK" AND COULDN'T FIND A STABLE SETTING. (THIS IS THE POINT WHERE I SHOULD HAVE STARTED BURNING LIKE A MADMAN.)
AS FAR AS USING A NEW HD, I WAS GUARANTEED BY THE FLIPBOOK MONKEY AT MEDION THAT ALL MY STUFF WOULD BE GONE.

WELL THANKS ANYWAY... I WAS JUST HOPING THERE WAS SOMETHING I COULD DO. THANKS KEES.
