'OFFICIAL' THREAD: New Cnet Layout

Aug 26, 2008 8:55AM PDT

Now that the new site is going live I am creating this thread for the discussion of any bugs or random thoughts on the new layout. It's a big switch from the years of yellow and green, but it's a little sleeker than the previous design and hopefully a bit more functional as well. Love it or hate it, after you've had a chance to browse the new layout (which should be fully rolled out this evening) feel free to sound off below. I know I will. Happy

Flat View header/footer issue remains...
Aug 26, 2008 9:50AM PDT

For example, load this link and see where the header and footer are positioned. (Screenshot) Only happens when the user is logged in but affects all browsers.

Yup, we are aware of it....
Aug 26, 2008 9:55AM PDT

We'll eventually get to it.

There are also still a few stray green buttons out there, so I just wanted to bring that up before you report it, John. Grin

Thanks!

Whaaa? John you haven't found them yet... you're slacking..
Aug 26, 2008 10:11AM PDT

J/K. I'll just let you discover them... hopefully I'll get them changed out before you find them.

BTW the green arrow stays, well at least for now...

Very well then...

The green unsubscribe button on the tracked thread page and the Save Preferences on the forum preferences page. Cool

No Member Bio/e-mail member/etc...
Aug 26, 2008 9:55AM PDT

I had assumed such would be included in the main launch, considering it's unavailable now that the old site is being dismantled entirely. Was it just overlooked in this release or is it still under development?

John

That will come.
Aug 26, 2008 10:07AM PDT

This version that you are seeing is the 1st phase which is the meat of the profile page. The other items will come when we release the second phase.

Thanks!

I hate to pry, but is there a timeframe?
Aug 26, 2008 10:11AM PDT

I was expecting the engineers to hold off on the release until all of the bugs were worked out and the new features finished, so I'm a little disappointed, particularly with the sudden inability to PM other members. At least during the beta it was still accessible by swapping out the browser's cookies.

John

I agree,
Aug 26, 2008 9:19PM PDT

that email option in the profile is sorely missed.

It means no-one has any avenue to privately contact anyone else.

If you want an email,
Aug 27, 2008 1:05AM PDT

I can still email you! Wink

I know the feature is useful for some...
Aug 27, 2008 2:21AM PDT

and with of our entire site launch, this was one of our lower priorities. I can't really begin to describe the amount work that went around to get to this point. It was just insane! But we going to continue to develop the profile pages out and make it better than it was before and hopefully make you all happy.

I will be honest with you guys, while the email a member is a great feature, it wasn't widely used (single digit of use per day). But I know it is a important feature to you and I will do what it take to get it implemented back into the profile pages. And also get your shiny 'Moderators' icons back in your profile.

Do you still have the old links available?
Aug 27, 2008 2:40AM PDT

Some parts of the old site, and even the 2005 version, are still up, just not linked to. Do you happen to have the link to one of the older e-mail member pages where we can manually just fill in the member's username? I have one, but it requires the member's ursRegId from the 2006 days.

I understand Lee,

and appreciate the problems, and the work that has gone into this.

Rick? Yeah, thanks! Happy

Cnet TV is missing its universal login...
Aug 26, 2008 10:15AM PDT

And, for the record, there are several other differences between the current version and the version shown in the screenshots of the 'Introducing the all new Cnet' page.

(NT) Yup. They are aware.

There are still two versions of the site being loaded...
Aug 26, 2008 10:20AM PDT

One with the red headers and division lines and the other with the new grey/yellow combo. The second overrides the first, but the latest version lacks enough vibrant color to make it stand out.

John

(NT) Yup. Aware of it. Thanks!

mark all as read doesn't work. Get redirected to a weird looking page.

Just loads header and footer immediately thereafter. Only some of the posts are marked as read. Seems to stop at the "Spamassassin problem" thread.

If it helps I am Using Mozilla Firefox 3.0.1

Rick

It's not fixed yet Rick. Our engineers are working on...
Aug 27, 2008 6:30AM PDT

other priorities right now, like making sure our "entire CNET site" is stable... we just flipped a switch to whole new site and the stability is a key factor right now.

It will get addressed. But the soaking has to come first.

Thanks!

John, Thank you for all your wonderful efforts to make the new CNET Forum imaging work. Lots of time spent on this project. Nice job! :

then the button started working again.

Yeah this was a weird hiccup.

If this bug comes up again, please update this thread to let me know. The engineer did look into, but then it started to work again.

Thanks Rick!

My Profile
Aug 26, 2008 10:39AM PDT

When I click on my profile, there is nothing there with my bio anymore.

While I'm there I see

My account settings

* Update my e-mail address or name
* Change my password
* Retrieve my lost password

Why would I want to retrieve my lost password, if I'm logged in?

Rick

- Collapse -
Rick we are adding the the bio and the other information...
Aug 26, 2008 10:48AM PDT

during the second phase of the CNET member profile.

Your profile information is still in our database and once we implement those parts of your profile, it should all appear.

"Why would I want to retrieve my lost password, if I'm logged in?"

Good question! I'll forward this feedback to Marc.

Thanks!

It might be useful...
Aug 26, 2008 11:07AM PDT

For instance, you created an account several months ago and never deleted your cookies, so you're still logged in, but realized you forgot your password and wish to retrieve it without being forced to logout and risk losing access. It complements the Change Password option, which requires you already know it. At least that's the way I thought of it when it first showed up.
