Office XP keeps locking up. Could Win XP SP2 be responsible?

Office XP keeps locking up.
Seeking your help!

For many months, several times during the day, Outlook will lock up when I try to open a file with or without an attachment from any folder.

I then close Outlook and restart it in Safe Mode. It goes through a process fixing the "Personal Folder" and "Archive Folder" which apparently had not been closed properly.

I then select ?Detect and Repair?, which prior to my updating Windows XP Pro to SP2 resided on my hard drive, now requires me to insert my Office XP Pro CD. When that is finished I close Outlook and restart it again normally and agree to the Software License terms.

Outlook runs fine for a while until I have to repeat the process two or more times a day.

I practice safe computing as best as I can and frequently check for updates for Windows XP Pro and XP Office (including automatically). I use the FREEDOM package from Zeroknowledge with Antivirus and Firewall through Telus and I also check my System with PestPatrol, CounterSpy and Ad-Aware. I also use JV16 Power Tools to clean my Registry from time to time.

I have a good Pentium 4 Computer with a
Gigabyte P4 GA-8GE667 Pro (845GE) Motherboard, 333 DDR, 533 MHz FSB
Intel Pentium 4 - 2.4 GHz CPU
512 MB 333MHz FSB 184 pin DDR RAM
80 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive
48x24x48 LG internal CDRW
Windows XP Pro with SP2

Thank you for any help you can provide.

I'm going to write no since that issue was noted in outlook (many versions) in Windows 2000 and XP at all Service Patches.

For what its worth I've found that to avoid a lockup, let outlook finish its mail check before using outlook.

Have you installed SP3 and all the other updates for OfficeXP yet? This issue might have been resolved already, and you're suffering needlessly.

For a long time, I was upset about a bug in the "gold" version of Office 2003, which renders it unable to open files made by other versions of Office (like Office 2004 for the Mac) even though they use the same file format. Turns out there was a fix on the Office Update site, not that such a bug should have ever escaped basic quality control to get into production level code in the first place.
