office 97 compatible with Vista?

May 8, 2009 11:29PM PDT

When I install office 97 edition on new laptop running windows vista, I get a message... "App uses CTL3D32.DLL which has not been correctly installed. CTL3D32.DLL must be installed in the windows system directory." Should I just switch to newer office edition? or how do I get CTL3D32.DLL? Don't really want to spend money on new product if old one will work properly.

Not really.

You may find some that claim it works but not all of it works.

If you want to try anyway, put that error message into google.com and see what others are doing to fix it.

In closing, try http://www.openoffice.org since it will open your doc and xls files today.

Running Office 97

You should be able to run Office 97 in Vista. I was. Just do the install using the Windows XP compatibility mode and install as the administrator. Select both of these on the Compatibility tab of the Properties for the installation. Then make the same selections for the program icon, and you should be good to go. This technique has worked for EVERY "Vista incompatible" program. ALL Vista compatible programs should be installed and run as the Administrator.
