Office 2K, Office XP, W98

by ust1268 / May 12, 2004 12:51 PM PDT

First of all there was no toolbar, icons, etc. Was getting the NAV msg 'cannot find the configuration files.' Couldn't use scanreg, (I was on C:, but the msg read 'cannot read drive E:\), so I installed W98 over itself (I really didn't want to reformat)and Office XP was already installed. After reinstalling 98, tried to open Word, Excel, etc and it said something like 'The user's name isn't registered to use this program.', plus I couldn't reinstall XP! So, the user said 'I've got Office 2000, install that.' Did that, into the same folder as XP. Word and PPT work fine, but the new Excel won't open. MS has a tool for MS Works in this kind of situation, but not Office. Any ideas?

A reinstall of Windows 98 over an existing installation is always tricky. If the only problem is Office, use the Microsoft Office Removal Wizards (on the CD or download them) to totally remove Office and reinstall the package.

Hope this helps.
