Office 2007 spell check doesn't work

by mcrump / January 31, 2007 1:00 AM PST

I have upgraded all of the office computers from Office 2003 to Office 2007. OS is Windows XP Pro. On one computer, all of the office applications spell checks don't work. I have checked all the Office system settings against the others and can't find one single setting different. Any ideas?

Still doesn't work
by mcrump / January 31, 2007 1:51 AM PST

No help at all. All settings are correct and still no spell check in word or outlook. A real head scratcher. Could I have lost the main dictionary? Anyone know the name of the main dictionary file?

Given the dollars involved, call MS and ask for a fix.

Microsoft does not have an answer
by MikeVein / February 2, 2007 12:27 PM PST

Pardon me if I mispell a word....

I called Microsoft today and they said they had no idea that this was an issue. They had no answer for me but said they would give me a call back tomorrow by 11CST. I hope to have an answer to post.

Office 2007 Spell Check Still Does Not Work
by MikeVein / February 3, 2007 4:57 AM PST

Well, Microsoft never called by 11 like they stated they would...not surprised though. I did call them with my trackin number and they Microsoft version of WebEx to look at my computer. After 2 hours they still did not have an answer to the problem. Here is what they did try though (When I stuck by the computer and watched):
1) Ran a diagnostic test (resulted in no errors)
2) Deleted various files in the registry
3) Removed a trial version of Visio 2007
4) Unistalled and reinstalled Office 2007

After all of that, when I run spell check "frjgfrt" still is a word. They claim they will call me back on Monday, but the catch was that I had to provide them a 4 hour window.

Trial Software is the Problem :: Office 2007 works now
by MikeVein / February 4, 2007 12:53 PM PST

I have come to the conclusion that the problem exists if a trial version was/is installed on the same computer that you are trying to install office 2007 on. When I installed Office 2007 onto a computer than only ever had Office 2003, the spell check worked fine. Having figured this out I attempted to uninstall Office 2007 and a Visio 2007 trial that I had installed on the computer I had the problems with. I unfortunately could not uninstall the programs and ended up reformatting my computer (I had to use a boot cd that did not come with my computer since it adds the office 2007 trial). When I did this the spell check worked fine. I wish Microsoft could have told me that?or even better, not even had this issue in the first place.

Office 2007 spell check dosen't work

Here is a solution if you're willing to do a minor edit to the registary:

as follows:

Start Regedit and goto the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing

I had 2 entries (DLL and LEX) pointing to non-existing files.

Rename these to oldDLL and oldLEX.

After this change all Spell Checking worked normal again.

Hopes this helps.

Does this fix work for Vista as well? I have never edited the registary before.

Thanks anyway.
That did not work.
For some reason I do not have the final folder listed as "override".
But I did find this listed else where and this worked. Easy enough Wink
Select All, then on the Review Ribbon, Proofing, Set Language, make sure that English US is selected and that the two checkboxes at the bottom are both clear: press DEFAULT

Office 2007 spell check doesn't work

Problem is with Microsoft.
Office 2007 deletes the English, Spanish and German dictionaries from Outlook Express.
Its not you or your computers, its Microsoft!
Trying to resolve the issue for weeks now, and found this little nugget on Microsoft's site.
Nice one Microsoft!!!!!
Had I know the problems I would have, I would never have updated Office!

problem with spell check due to proofing tools
by lqke / January 15, 2009 10:47 PM PST

All these registry keys adjustments didn't work.
putting everything back default didn't work.

I uninstalled the Windows XP Proofing Tools and installed Office 2007 Proofing tools kit.

Now the spelling checker works fine
