Office 2007 Enterprise configuring every time I open a file

Apr 23, 2007 9:59AM PDT

Hi folks. I'm running a fresh install of the Office 2007 Enterprise edition on my work PC, which runs XP SP2 and fully updated. The install seems to have gone fine, and when I'm in the programs themselves they all appear to have perfectly normal functionality. However things are not quite right. Whenever I open a file the installer pops up and says "Please wait while setup prepares the necessary files" and then I get a little green progress bar which tells me "Configuring Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007". This takes anything up to thirty seconds or so, and it can happen multiple times before the file eventually opens. I can close these windows and the files open immediately and all is well, but obviously I'd rather files just opened when I clicked on them as they are supposed to. I've updated Office as well, but it hasn't helped, nor has installing absolutely everything on the disk, which I thought might fix it (in case it was wanting to install stuff from the disk).

Any help would be much appreciated. Happy

Gold support.

The neat part of this Enterprise version is the free support. Just call it in and Microsoft or your IT staff will fix you up.

A bold plan, it might just work :)

Well the company IT guy would be, well, me, since I'm a freelancer, and I'm all out of ideas. I think I'll give the Microsoft bods a try in the morning when I'm less tired and wrathful. It's 2am and I've been battling this thing all night. Installing, uninstalling, reinstalling, and picking through my laptop to make damn sure I took out the remnants of the beta version of office 2007.

What I suspect is causing it is the fact that I had the beta software installed before and no matter how many uninstalls and registry cleans I run I can't shake the feeling that some bit of it is still in there somewhere laughing at me and breaking stuff. Last thing in the world I want to have to do is a fresh OS install. Sad

Did you use this tool?

"Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility"

They should mention that. Why would you pay thousands for Enterprise and not have a few hundred staffers or users. Seems to be wasteful.

Also with that version costing more than 10 machines I wonder...

Will give that a shot

I'll give that program a go, though I might be barking up the wrong tree entirely with the beta. It was a pretty messy uninstall as I remember, and other than that I can't see any real reason why it should have gone strange.

Regarding the copy of Office it isn't one I bought, it's one that I blagged from the people I usually work for. So it's a bought and paid for and legit copy which I'm using as a perk. Which is why I'm not sure why the bloody thing is not working, if I'd pirated it I'd be less indignant.

Still no joy

Well I'm going to try installing absolutely everything I can, and also downloading every possible update for Office and Windows in the hope that one of them will fix it.

Hunting for clues...
Apr 23, 2007 2:45PM PDT

Well it's been a grim night of stabbings in the dark. Googling around has found all sorts of random bugs, but only one person has appeared to have the same bug I do, and he also seems to have been a beta tester, so maybe it is related to that after all. Unfortunately though he didn't find a solution either.

That seems to confirm ...

that it's a bad idea to beta test on a production machine.

No help at all, I'm afraid.

That's called piracy.

And Microsoft would love to talk to you about it.

Sorry but the forums are not for discussion about such things so this discussion is over and locked.
