Does any one thinks they will come out with office 07 for osx, and when?

No,

There will be no Office 2007 for the Mac.
Note how all the Office for Mac numbers are even ones.
Office 98, X, 2004.
The next should be the Universal Binary one which will probably be released whenever they can spare their programmers from working on the late, very late, release of Vista. At the rate that OS is slipping we can look forward to Office 2010 sometime.

Fine by me

Is there any point in waiting for new versions of Office on the Mac? Microsoft is highly unlikely to fix anything you actually care about - like the spelling mistakes in Word's spellcheck and its irritating habit of changing fonts for no reason.

Instead, all we'll get is a bunch of pointless new features, like the ability to paste 5.1 surround sound into a spreadsheet, or alert you to your mother's birthday by Entourage calling your home number.

Ten years ago, you could fit Word onto a floppy. I can't honestly say the current offering is any better, despite the fact that it's 19.4MB. Am I alone in this?

No, you are not alone

Word 5.1, arguably the best word processor ever produced for the Mac, did everything I wanted and then some. All on one floppy.
I do not know many people who use 25% of Word's capabilities for their day to day office work.

Word for Mac 5.1 (sigh!)

I am with you all the way about Word 5.1. Though I haven't known many of the Word versions (had 4 before I got 5.1, then 98), I can only say that 5.1 was a gem. Must tech companies always reinvent the wheel? (This is me cursing quietly in a corner.)

It will be called Office 2008

Apparently Office 2007 will be called Office 2008 because a/ it will be introduced in late 2007, and b/ just in case they can't get the thing out in time. The question of whether to wait or not is not one I can answer because I already use it. You might want to use open office or neo office (?) in the meantime - both are freeware and both are quite adaptable when it comes to saving in different formats.
