Office 2003 Start-up problems

Feb 27, 2006 4:52PM PST

Hi

I am having problems with a couple of the products in the office family - Access and Excel close when trying to open certain files. These files open on other machines with no problem but on this machine they fail to. The application either opens and terminates if you try and open the file without the program open or they just terminate as soon as you try and open a file.

On top of this the problem is also occuring when I try and access the internet with Internet Explorer - I double click the icon - it appears for a split second and then goes.

I tried to solve the problem by uninstalling office and then re installing it. I have checked for updates - I have read the FAQ section here and found no help... does anyone knoe what is causing this problem and how it can be fixed?

I look forward to hearing from anyone!!

All .mdb and .xls fail, or only some?

For IE:
Repair from Config Panel>Add Remove. Select Microsoft Internet Explorer, then select Remove, then choose Repair.

Generally:
It wouldn't be a bad idea to have a good malwarecheck. Try downloading Ewido on another machine, install and run it. Has there been malware on the machine that you removed recently?

When did the problems begin? Same time for Office and IE?

I think Office was around the same time/perhaps a little bit later than IE...

I will check for Malware... and will let you know the outcome - thanks for your help so far...

It is only certain files that dont open - I thought they were corrupt files but they open ffine on other machines...

try compacting/repairing them (Tools>Utilities, if I may guess). No need to open them before.

No clue for Excel. Maybe rename/delete the excel*.xlb (toolbar definitions) and personal.xls (personal macro file)? Those files survive an uninstall/reinstall.
