Styles are kept in normal.dot. Did you check Tools>Options>Save "Ask if normal.dot should be saved" (or something like that, I don't have the English version).
Also it might help to set normal.dot to read-only in Explorer. That should certainly keep it steady.
Hope this helps.
I've had it! I customize my Microsoft Word, but my styles are ever changing. I've set up my "Normal" style to be Verdana 11 pt. black. And I've unchecked the "Automatically Update" so I won't be driven nuts by the program changing all my text when I just want one or two lines.
But I cut and pasted something from the Web today and regardless of where I cut it, I'm always amazed that my list of styles keeps changing. (Today "Normal" was Ariel 12 pt.!) And every now and again my text will begin right at the very top of the page and go to the very end of the page. Insert a page number, though, and behold, everything goes back to normal margins.
MS Office is the only ap I know that keeps getting worse in some respects as it gets better. I try customizing my toolbars and sometimes my changes are there and other times they're not and still other times are partially there.
If anyone has any helpful insights, book or website recommendations, I'd be grateful.
