Off the wall question about Outlook Express . . .

Feb 4, 2015 3:26AM PST

running on my XP Pro machine.

I'll get an email from a friend that has pictures. If I want to save the picture I'll right click, choose save, and I get a message that the picture/file can't be found. 'Scuse me, I'm looking at it!

I've found that if I forward the message to myself, when I get it and right click the picture it works.

Any thoughts?

Sure. Many Antivirus block such

Some antivirus have a a setting like "Do not allow attachments [Attachment (warning)] to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" which can cause this. OLEXP on its own would be fine.

In advance, such a picture is always an attachment. I'd rather not duplicate the web on that.

PS. that cache. Time to clear it.

Since there is an interplay of IE and OE (e i e i o?) we always want to clear IE's cache once in a while.

Because the image could be jpeg, and the save file would be bmp, odd messages that lead one away from the problem are not uncommon.

Don't use OE but the picture is an attachment

I'd look for a paperclip or a way to detach the image rather than try to save it through a viewer.

May or may not be relevant

Hmmmmm . . .

Good thoughts but . . .

RP - Yep, but no. The photo is visible in the email.

RP - Nope again.

SH - Not trying to view it, just save it.

SH - Not blocked.

Maybe I should have mentioned that this doesn't happen on all emails. Just some. No big deal, just wondered if anyone knew exactly why it happened. Wink

Re: pics

I think it depends on the e-mail program of the sender. The support in Outlook Express for embedded pictures leaves something to be desired. Pictures that are explicitely attached won't give a problem.

As you tell it, it seems OE sends the picture in a somewhat other way then it's received (its own way), so it can handle it better when receiving it again.

Could be the idea that the pictures are embedded is correct

I suppose you could grab a screen shot but you'd be living with a lesser quality image.

(NT) So what about that AV and cache?

Thar would both be ...

very easy to test once you have a mail with such dis-behaving images indeed. Maybe Wayne can do it, just out of curiosity.

An experiment

Can you send yourself and email message with a .jpg as an attachment? This might help confirm whether or not your problem messages are due to images being embedded rather than attached.

Yep . . .

Works.
