General discussion

OE mail won't open maximised.

Aug 10, 2005 4:18PM PDT

Suddenly OE mail automatically opens minimised rather than maximised. No idea why. The mail can be maximised from right-click menu.

No viruses or pests. AVG 7, S&D, MS Anti-spyware, Adaware, Critical updates are current.

No restore points. IEFix no help.

Any ideas?

Am using an OEM version of XP Home with IE 6 SP2.

Thanks.

Hi Carol,

I haven't heard this problem before and I am not sure how to resolve it, but perhaps this would work?

When OE is maximised, right click on the header bar, (mine is blue on my XP computer), select Restore.

What does this do?

If it doesn't work I will look around some more, and perhaps others here can help.

Good luck,

Mark

Thanks Mark, but...

no repair option on the Header bar right click menu.

BTW, warrented by emachines but can't get a response from them. According to an earlier contact with emachines, because the IE is OEM I can't even remove/reinstall.

Thanks.

Restore
Aug 14, 2005 7:14AM PDT

Hi again.

When you said "Repair", do you mean there was no "Restore" option on the header?

It's Restore you need.

If there is no Restore option at all, then that is a different problem. But if the Restore option is greyed out, then what Testy says is right.

It means that the window "is not" maximised, but is as large as the desktop window so it looks like it is maximised. That means you can still drag the window around using the header, and re-size it accordingly.

Mark and Testy, sorry bout the confusion...

Right, I should have said ''restore'' but when I click on Restore from the Header the email goes to the Task bar. And when I right click on the email on the Task bar the Restore option is greyed out. And when I maximise using the right click menu from the Task bar the email maximizes. And when I click on the minimize button (not the ''-'' button)in the upper right corner of the email it is sent to the the task bar rather than simply resizing. In any case, it seems no matter what I do the email will not minimize so I can drag it.

Sorry for the delay Carol

And I'm sorry our quick fix didn't. Fix it that is.

Is this just a problem with OE, or does it happen with other applications? it's weird if it is just one application.

I'll be honest, I'm running out of ideas fast.

The only other thing I can suggest is to save your .pst files, (i think it's .pst for OE), save your address book and email settings, get your Office CD handy, uninstall OE, reboot the computer then re-install OE.

Actually it's "caktus"

Only OE is affected. The rest of IE, resizing and all are fine.

I assume you were refering to .dbx files. I backed-up and protected them.

I'm still a little shaky about removing/reinstalling OE as emachines tech said it shouldn't be done as there is no (OEM) disk. The entire system (as new) is backed-up on a protected partition D:\ but I'm having trouble figuring how to use it. Not much as far as instructions as the system was suposed to be bare-bones w/o an OS but turned out it had XP Home pre-installed. Wish I could get emachines to get back to me on this. Guess I'll just keep trying.

Any other advice or suggestions anyone could impart would be appreciated.

In any case I guess it's good training.

Foregot I had a good restore point from a couple months ago the name of I had altered so it could not get dumped. Lost a few program setup files, but no big deal.

Sorry Caktus, I really don't know where I got Carol from.

A Senior Moment I expect.

I was going to suggest a solution with a link here;
http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6142-0.html?forumID=5&threadID=120524&messageID=1367167

I see you have also given advice on that thread, and then I saw Tufenuf's advice, which is advice from Mod Toni and has been used many times before, and seemed to work.

I know its about IE, but I just wondered if a similar method would work with your OE problem.

Anyway, not needed now. I'm glad you got it sorted at last.

After first reading Toni's post I had tried that with OE. But it only worked for the OE window but not the email windows.

But glad I remembered that old Restore point. I just wish I could remember how I altered it's name in the first place (and why I was able to change it back. Now when I try to alter the name of a Restore point I get an error message that:

"Cannot rename folder RP54. Access is denied. Make sure that the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not in use."

"Show files and folders"is unchecked. RP54 is set to "Read only" but every time I uncheck "Read only" attribute and click Apply/OK, I find that it has changed back to "Read Only".

Best I can tell the disk is not wright protected and has 43.5G available space and that the file is not in use.

Being able to protect the Restore point was a realy cool thing. I think I'm pretty much determined to figure out how I did it. It would certainly be a great attribute to the Windows OS's.

Have a great day.

Found a way to protect a Restore Point
Aug 18, 2005 10:06AM PDT

In C:\System Volume Information\_restore{F845E3DB-F751-4BE4-A620-64F2CA1BFB5F}, while depressing the Ctrl key I was able to drag a System Restore Point (in this case RP5Cool to the Desktop and there renamed it to RP58xxx. Turned off System Restore to delete the Restore points. I then turned System Restore back on and draged (and later also copied) RP58xxx to the new _restore{F845E3DB-F751-4BE4-A620-64F2CA1BFB5F} and renamed it to RP58. Using System Restore RP58 was successfully restored to the system.

Using the same proceedure I was able to save RP58 to CD. Using the CD I was able to copy RP58 to the _restore{F845E3DB-F751-4BE4-A620-64F2CA1BFB5F} folder and again successfully restored RP58.

Still not sure how I did it the first time. Mabe just a computer fluke or a human fluke, probably the latter.

That's an interesting way

to save Restore points, (say to a networked computer, or CD), and delete all the other points to save HD space.

Very useful.

Since you mention HD space...

I checked and my RP's are each over 51MB (and I assume that's small for RP's). Didn't realize those rascals took up so much memory.

After you open the mail, place your cursor on corners and drag it to full size where you like it. Then close email, from then on they should open full size.
