OE--all emails show attachment symbol

Mar 13, 2005 11:09AM PST

Each email I receive comes with a little Email attachment symbol, with no real attachment. Is this a worm or a virus? My virus scanner is up to date--it's just annoying!
Thank you!!!

using AVG? Is there an antivirus certification at the bottom of each e-mail?

If you're using AVG 7 anti-virus protection it seems that Outlook Express recognises AVG's certification at the bottom of received emails as an attachment.

There is a thread on the matter elsewhere on these forums.

Go to tools then options. Click on the security tab and see if it is marked to not download attachments with a potential virus. If so, uncheck it.

"Using e-mail certification"

See the content of "How to certify e-mails with AVG FREE Edition" that explains when you use AVG to certify e-mail:

Certification is added outside of your email client which means that you cannot see it when you send an email. The certification is added as a TXT attachment in HTML messages. Incoming certification overwrites the previous ones. If you send an email to yourself with both incoming and outgoing certifications enabled, you will see only the latest incoming certification.

Certification can also be delivered as attachment. Kindly check to see if you have any attached documents to your email.

Kameonq, Just Another Thought...

Do you have Outlook Express 6, and if so, do you have it set to "Read all messages in plain text". If that's the case, and you are sent an HTML message, then plain text reading may be placing the HTML portion of the message in an attachment.

Check your settings by opening Outlook Express, click on "Tools" in the upper left, choose "Options" from the menu. When that loads, click on the "Read" tab. Is the box next to "Read all messages in plain text" CHECKED? If so, try UNCHECKING it.

Hope this helps.

e-mail attachments
Mar 14, 2005 6:41AM PST

I had the same problem,it's called a phantom attachment.

Open AVG control center>select the e-mail scanner box>select plugins tab>select configure button>which opens a test options (window)>then under e-mail scanning check all six boxes, incoming mail, certify mail, with attachments only
outgoing mail, certify mail, with attachments only. Also the plain text format must be checked. The file attachment icon I get, even though there is no attachment is called a phantom attachment.
