General discussion

OE 6 Keeps removeing my attachments.

May 25, 2004 10:10AM PDT

Windows XP SP1
How do I stop OE6 from removeing my attachments?
I don't use it very often, mostly I use Yahoo and Hotmail. When I try to send a page or link OE6 will strip it, does't make any difference what site it is.
My PC is working great except for this and it's probably a minor adjustment.

It is a security feature that is enabled in Outlook Express, also can happen in Outlook.

So many people were getting viruses via those two popular mail tools (either with an attachment or a link that when clicked on took you to a website that could also load you up with a virus) that MS decided to patch those protections in the safer mode. By stripping those types of items from your email, either when you send it, or perhaps when someone tries to send you one.

If this PC is on a company internet, you may not be allowed to disable those protections. But if this is at home, on your own PC, I am sure there are ways to get it back the way you prefer.

I won't tell you here, because that would be irresponsible of me to tell you how to unprotect yourself, but it is a simple chore to find out for yourself. Just 'Google" for an answer.

One caution FIRST! Make sure that you have a good virus checking program that you frequently update, that will watch over those attachments and links that you send or receive. You just can't be too careful.

Larry, Have You Tried This??

If you're using Internet Explorer 6/Outlook Express 6, you might check this.

Open Outlook Express, click on "Tools" in the upper left, choose "Options", then click on the "Security" tab, UNCHECK the box that says: "Don't allow attachments that could be viruses to be saved or opened". Click on "Apply", the OK, etc.

Hope this helps.

Another option

is to stop using IE and OE altogether. Netscape,Mozilla,Opera are just the three more popular freebies available and unlike MS products they dont shove things down your throat which you dont need!

Hi Grif,
You are correct that box is checked but I am going to leave it that way as I use Yahoo and Hotmail. I don't use OE6 much. My PC is working fine, and I keep all systems updated daily.
Thanks

I don't understand?

When I try to send a page or link OE6 will strip it, does't make any difference what site it is.

1. Based on the underlined text of your question, how do you know?

2. Care to give a URL site address and a dissertation of what you're sending and to whom?
