Odd we're not 'popular...'

by Dave Konkel [Moderator] / June 9, 2004 4:28 AM PDT

when SE has about 2x as many messages as the most popular forum on the list. Sheesh!

We're there. It's just that we're listed in the middle instead of the top. It is unstated what order the list is displayed in. It's not alphabetical. Did you check the volume on all those forums?

I suspect CNet's capitalist overlords are trying to have their cake and eat it too by supporting the forum while leading astray those who would benefit from the free thinking expressed here.

Or, maybe not.

could it be
by Dick White / June 10, 2004 12:20 AM PDT

based on the number of threads at the root level? SE has vastly more posts, but many of ours are 100+ (including deletions Devil ) from a single topic, whereas I can't imagine a WinXP topic that could be dragged that far... I also thought there might be something "arranged" about the list so as to push the top 5 technical topics to the most popular list on the right sidebar of each page, but then I noticed that the longer list at the bottom of the main page has SE as #5 overall? Who knows what evil drives the marketing types...

Of course, they say 'popular', not 'most popular'. That gives 'them' some wiggle room. Then again, the top of the list for 'Hot Discussions' has 70 posts. Some Speakeasy members won't even open a thread that has less than one hundred messages. I don't think I've seen Speakeasy on the 'Most Recent Posts' list before, but I don't look at the main forums page very much.

It's entirely possible that 'they' are trying to marginalize 'us'.

Trust no one.

I think we're the b*****d child nobody wants to talk about. Either that or we're like porn sites; everyone knows they get the most traffic but everyone also knows why.

XP forum has half the the posts of SE, but...

only ten pages less as of this message. Compared 134 pages for SE and 124 pages for XP forum. Odd. Maybe the key is how many INITIAL or thread beginning posts exist that affect the stats, and not total message count.
