General discussion

Odd occurence=no Shut Down

Mar 22, 2005 3:01AM PST

On my 2nd computer that I use as a test-bed for newer distros I am interested in, I am running Mandrake 10.1.
It is doing a very odd thing. When I click "Shut Down"
from the menu, it will just re-boot and I have to shut
it down manually. Have looked in BIOS and in Mandrake, but can find nothing obvious. Has anyone run into this before? Any ideas where to look? Probably something simple I am looking at, but not seeing. TIA chuck

I. . .

. . . have no clue. I spend more time trying to get Mandrake to start-up than anything.

It always freezes when Harddrake, Alsa daemon, and some others start up.

Ever thought of..........

making a screenshot, burn it to disc to remind you how you like things, and reinstalling? Sounds like you got a bad(or incomplete) install. I am using 10.0 and 10.1 right now and have used 10.2 beta 3. Never had this happen without something installing wrong. FWIW chuck

A few basic troubleshooting questions
Mar 23, 2005 8:08AM PST

How long have you had Mandrake 10.1 on your test box? Is this a fresh install, or not?

If this isn't a fresh install, what was the last package you changed before your problem started happening?

Do you have MandrakeUpdate on? If so, what was the last update before the problem popped up?

Do you have the same problem no matter which desktop you're using (KDE, GNOME, etc.)?

Valid questions. Last distro was Mandrake 10.2 beta 3, before that, Fedora Core 3. When I tried to get updates for the 10.1, I got the "No updates available" message.
Same for 10.2, but that's understandable for a beta. No,
I haven't tried KDE(or even thought of it). DOH There was a hardware issue after install. Cured, but could have
affected it. I'll try KDE, then a new install. Thanks for
the pointers. Sometime you can be too focused to see the whole picture. chuck

That's one of the few drawbacks of Linux - lack of intelligible error reporting.

If you get into a real jam, don't forget that you can use the Linux rescue procedure to troubleshoot, too - although it's been kind of tricky with Mandrake in the past.

Oh well

Same problem in KDE. Completely erased HDD with dban and
reinstall Mandrake 10.2. Since the problem still exists, it would seem to point to BIOS or more probably hardware. This older motherboard has done something similar before
in that when supposedly shutdown, it still had power going to fans and such. Will remove side panel one of these days and figure it out. Thinking of using this computer as an "Office" computer with Mandrake 10.0 on it since that will load my scanner and printer with no hassle. Thanks for the interest. chuck

Appears to be ACPI or Hardware reset. Normally I leave
them disabled when I install BIOS. This time I enabled both when trying to make sensors work with LM Sensors.
Don't know which was the problem, but everything returned to normal when they were disabled. chuck
