Resolved Question

Odd Internet Issue

by Valkyrith / November 20, 2013 1:18 PM PST

I'm not 100% sure this is the place for this, but it does technically involve wireless...

I'm having this odd issue with my computer concerning my internet speed.
Just moved into a new place and my internet isn't performing as well as it should be, but this only seems to be an issue on my desktop. The wireless seems to be functioning just fine (even on game systems). I'm supposed to have around 15mb/s, and I'm maxing out around 2.5mb/s at the absolute best on the desktop. There's one other desktop here, but it's not currently functioning, so I'm not sure if it's all desktops on the fritz.
One thing of note, this issue may have been present prior to the move. My internet before now was rather slow, so I may have just not noticed it before now.

Thank you in advance for any assistance and I apologize for any inconvenience if this is indeed in the wrong place.

Huge change
by Valkyrith / November 20, 2013 3:41 PM PST

I continued messing with cables and rotating things around, and my speed randomly spiked to well above anything it has been prior (10-12mb/s). Still lower than that of my laptop, but a vast improvement. My guess is the current difference is largely the work of some of the things you mentioned.

I have absolutely no idea what caused the change given how many times I switched things around and restarted my computer, but I won't complain that it's working (at least for now).

Odd to me.

In reply to: Why would it be odd?

It may not necessarily be odd to everyone else, but as I've never encountered the issue before (knowingly, anyway), it is an odd thing for me.

I'll skim the link you sent me, but I'm not really setting up a very large network. I'm in a rather small apartment.
Assuming that thread pertains solely to the topic title, that is.

Update
by Valkyrith / November 20, 2013 2:17 PM PST
In reply to: Odd to me.

Since I've yet to see a way to edit my previous posts, I'll simply reply to my last one.
I skimmed the links, and they provided no help whatsoever.

I tried connecting my laptop directly to the router, and it runs just as it does on wireless. Perfectly.
I tried cycling around some of the cables I'm using and switching the ports I'm making use of, which provided no change at all.

Then we'll have to hear more.

In reply to: Update

All I read are symptoms and no detail about make, model, firmware versions, settings and enough detail to offer more than the usual chat about how there are issues with WiFi in general. If you moved into a new space and if it's congested or you are unlucky to have a neighbor with an old 2.4GHz cordless phone, there's little to be written about that hasn't been written.

Your tone sounds demanding. I understand that as I work such issues with clients all the time. But in those cases I have access to the router, can use a wifi channel sniffer and swap routers and laptops as required.

Sorry
by Valkyrith / November 20, 2013 2:53 PM PST

First and foremost, I want to apologize if I am coming across as being demanding or unpleasant. That's by no means my intention.

Another quick update, I restarted the system in safe mode with networking, which seems to help. The speed is exactly as it should be. Went back to normal boot-up and it's back to having issues.

I'm unsure of how to obtain all of that information in all honesty. It's a computer I ordered parts for and a friend of mine helped me assemble.

That's a very good clue.

Let's take a look at the log file from HIJACKTHIS.

The most common thing I encounter is hotspot shields and such. But I don't see enough detail so a log file is needed.

Please copy, paste it in a reply to your top post so I can look it over and remove it as we work on it.

I can't tell if you took the tip in the links provided and set the router back to 802.11g mode for a test run.

Think I found it.
by Valkyrith / November 21, 2013 4:40 AM PST

I checked the link you gave me involving Avast, and I tried a fresh install using the setup that was provided in that thread, and it seems to have fixed the issue I was having. I didn't try it last night because of the massive leap in speed.
Odd, given that I've never had this issue before so far as I'm aware, and I've pretty much always used avast. I'm a little wary of using it without part of its settings active, so I guess I should hunt down a new virus protection.

Thank you for all of your help. I'll check back if it starts acting goofy again.

https://www.google.com/search?q=avast+kills+wifi+speed+site:forum.avast.com&safe=on

Sorry about all the work you had to do but there are many causes for this one. None are odd in my book, just annoying how it's rarely the same thing so we can't take a solution but use what we've learned over time.

Your test with Safe Mode and Networking was key to understanding a possible cause. Sorry but I lump all those antivirus and firewalls that tinker with WiFi under the group I call "Hotspot shields."

And as you can imagine, a lot of them fail for reasons only their authors may know. That is, you rarely find a company write "Opps, sorry, we goofed up version 12.0.22."
