General discussion

odd emails

Jan 3, 2006 7:27AM PST

I'm using OE6 on XP Home Edition.

Recently I've been getting occasaional emails with nothing but

<a href=''http://s[3

or some slight variant in the text, there's usually some graphic file sent as an attachment too.I got three of these messages today, they are not even addressed to me but always some slightly different email address. The one I got today had

re[7]:

in the subject field and an attachment called

featherbedding.gif

anyone have any clues what's going on?.I have Norton installed and fully updated but it hasn't detected any virus.I have always deleted these emails without opening the attachments.

one other thing

Can't remember what all the other attachments were called and don't know if it was a good idea to do this but out of curiosity I googled a couple of them which took me to websites containing nothing but links to graphics files.

featherbedding.gif , for example brings up one such site called cvvrszk's top page , all these pages have gobbledegook names and suggest that visitors ''Download Free Picture''

I haven't of course.What are these sites?

Just keep deleting them

without opening them. These malware writers are writing new variants of virus/trojans/worms/etc. faster than ANY of the antivirus and antitrojan companies can keep up with them.

I'll certainly do that

But what about the sites I mentioned, what's going on there do you think?

They are ripoff sites of one sort.

or another. You shouldn't go anywhere near them. Just delete the e-mails and forget they even came. Most everybody receives things like this via e-mail so you are not alone in receiving them.
