Occasional problems connecting to the Internet

I had to download SP2 a few months ago to get the latest version of AVG free edition. Since then I've had trouble connecting to the Net with IE and Firefox. At times it works normally and others the page just hangs and I have to close the window and open it back up again and again. It doesn't matter what site I may go to, Netscape, Google, Wash Post, ESPN, IMDB, it happens. My computer has Win XP Pro with SP2 and I just recently wiped my HD and reinstalled everything, but it still seems to be happening. I'd appreciate your help if you have any ideas.
