o2 Broadband connections

Oct 2, 2009 7:55PM PDT

I have a Targa Traveller laptop. I live in rural Southwest Ireland, (West Cork). I use O2 as my ISP using a Huawei E220 HSDPA USB modem. When I first used this system in a former property about six miles away it worked, but was erratic, but usually receiving broadband albeit not fast. It was not fast enough to use SKYPE. Sometimes it was only on a system called EDGE 256 kbps. I am now in this new property, and rarely receive broadband, but it is there occasionally.
There are various devices that are advertised to improve the signal to these external modems, does anyone know how successful they are at improving the signal from the 3g mast? The options for broadband in this part of the world is either expensive or virtually non existent.
Thank you for any help you can give me on this matter.
Regards Barry Laughton
