NZ to rollout HDTV But full of DRM

Jun 11, 2006 8:02AM PDT

Though many consumers have been told new sets are HDTV-ready, they will not work without a key component ? an anti-pirating device. The internal hardware protects programme right-holders from unauthorised showing or copying and must be in place before shows can screen. Consumer Affairs Minister Judith Tizard has met Sky bosses about the issue and the ministry is investigating.

Consumer Electronics Association executive officer Garth Wyllie said representatives agreed action was needed.

The association planned to spearhead an update of six-year-old standards to ensure future televisions sold as "HDTV-ready" had the anti-piracy component.

Why should you care ??

NZ is often used to test technologies for the rest of the world, We have a small population (4 Million) and tend to early adoption. SKY supplies Pay TV to 40% of the NZ population. If we adopt this the set with it will be all you can get in a few years.

SO much for the agreement not to use it for some time, Looks like that's a US situation only.

Cos its coming Here with full Government, Broadcaster, and Supplier support. All we Kiwi's can hope for is that people refuse to Pay for it the way it is? But they probably won't know anything about it.

Looks like its time for a Hack solution.

NZ Govt should consider terrestrial HDTV
Jun 11, 2006 10:08AM PDT

Even though our terrestrial HDTV is bad quality (576p, go figure), I think New Zealand is viable to have terrestrial HDTV. Letting Sky having a monopoly on HDTV would lead to something like this, so terrestrial HDTV could give fairer competition in the market.

You're light years ahead of us, Foxtel Digital still hasn't introduced HD channels. :\ Let alone, you can't even get Channel 7 and Channel 10 on digital, just an analogue rebroadcast. :\

Sky UHF

Is Sky planning on broadcasting HD over their terrestrial network or just via satellite? What is OTA reception like their?

By the way, I just was working for the Eagles, USA Men's National Team, when the Maori's killed them and beat Ireland "A". I would love to see a rugby match in HD here in the states.

OTA is Cr*P, Digital is the way to go

I have the Sky digital package (satellite) and its great, I often record to my PC and watch later, Which was really good this weekend as I was off in the bush with a boys camp and missed some good shows, I have been catching up while resting my now very tired bones.

Sky will only be HD over Sat, but most homes are Sat.

as for the HD DRM, I already e-mailed sky and told them that I was not only opposed to DRMed HD but would not purchase under such conditions.

I am sure that I'll get the usual form letter meaning nothing, but I have warned other users too that they wont be able to watch the rugby later unless you pay for the Sky PVR service if they get away with this.

Unless you can buy a DVD-recorder with the correct chips to decode the signal.

Do a see magic cables comming on the market to do this .. You better believe it

Man this SUX .. I at least will be complaining loudly and strongly.

errstrial will be problematic in NZ
Jun 12, 2006 7:10AM PDT

Sky only plan this for the Satellite service only. UHF and VHF radio transmissions in NZ suffer terribly due to our very hilly and densely bush clad terrain. Sydney had big issues with buildings, so imagine our reception with huge hills everywhere.

Sat is the best option for NZ due to how complex our aerial systems would need to be to get a good digital terrestial signal. Its being trialled in Auckland, but its not working very well.

When Optus D1 launches later in the year. TVNZ, BCL and CANWEST (TV3 and C4) l have a service too, but at this stage they are not planning HDTV. Mostly due to poor sales of HDTV units at this time.

Later this week, The Government will announce its strategy for Digital TV. We will then see what will happen to the frequencies that they are using now, and what incentives are available to make people switch from analogue to digital.
