Question

NX Client (nomachine.com) on OSX Lion?

Jul 26, 2011 6:13AM PDT

NoMachine NX (secure remote access to servers on Linux boxes) is a tool I use all the time in my business. It works fine under Rosetta on Snow Leopard, and is the showstopper preventing me from an upgrade to Lion. (I have 10.6.8 on an i5 purchased about a month ago.)

Not sure what we can do

Not sure what we can do. Sounds like you'll just have to wait for the developers to get around to making a non-PPC version.

And just as a general rule, it's not a good idea to rely on software that needs support software in order to function. So, any program that needs Rosetta to function still, 5-6 years AFTER Apple made the switch to Intel CPUs, probably is something you want to find a replacement for. Same goes for programs that have effectively been abandoned, either because the company behind them went out of business, stopped making that particular program, or you've just been too lazy/cheap/stubborn to upgrade.

There are probably a million and one good reasons why what you have works just fine, blah blah blah, but at the end of the day, it doesn't make those programs magically work again. Not to belabor the point, but when Snow Leopard was released, Rosetta was made an optional install by default, which was something of a warning that it was going to go away. And I know you said you just bought your iMac a month ago, but others may come along later and read this, who seem to be so obtuse as to miss anything short of a giant neon flashing sign... And maybe even that.

Says Intel on the site
Nov 22, 2011 11:49PM PST

The strtnge thing is NoMachine state PPC and Intel on their download web site yet while it installs correctly (?), when you try to run it, it states PPC is not supported.
So the statement that it runs on Intel is at least misleading if not just wrong.
and yes, I have tried it in 64 and 32 bit mode.

Throw away

<span id="INSERTION_MARKER">This attitude goes a long way towards explaining why Apple botched its xserve strategy. It's no wonder the company specializes in disposable consumer products.

(NT) Seems to apply to all consumer products today.

NX Client on OSX Lion - resolved
Jul 28, 2011 8:01AM PDT

(OP here) - There is an open source product called "opennx" (see http://opennx.net). It is advertised to work fine on Lion, and I verified that it works fine on Snow Leopard with Rosetta disabled.

Glad you found a replacement.

I took it that this was not an option and thought it best you get with the author at NoMachine about a fix.

Glad to see you found a replacement. Some folk are not as open to that solution.

NX Client on my TI 99/4a
Mar 15, 2012 2:23AM PDT

I can't believe it, but there is still no support for an NX client on my TI 99/4a. I can't understand why they don't put in the effort to get this to work, its simply not acceptable that software I rely on but of course don't pay for because I download it for free doesn't work on this critical platform, not to mention my TRS-80 or my Apple ][.

Might want to try NX 4 Preview release
Aug 2, 2011 6:30AM PDT

After upgrading to the NX 4 Preview Release on my OSX Lion system, I was able to successfully connect to my Linux NX Server, which I also upgraded to the NX 4 Preview Release.

I'm not a big fan of betas, but honestly their version 4 preview has been in preview for a long time, if that's any comfort.

Just another option...

NX Nomachine 4 expiration limit
Oct 13, 2011 11:05PM PDT

Beware. I took this path. Indeed Nx v 4 is cool and stable. BUT it is valid only 60 days. After that you need download the last version and uninstall-reinstall to be goog for another 60 days. At least this what I had to do on my NX 4 server on Ubuntu.
