install nvidia-settings after getting video

interrupt boot process and use Tab or "e" key or whatever is needful to change the boot line. For older Linux try vga=791 and remove the vnt handoff part of that initrd line. For current Linux versions, substitute GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX="1024x768" in that line.

While booted into the system, find and install the proper driver, ask help from the forum of whichever Linux version you are using. Many drivers can easily be found and loaded from the Package Manager in the distro, or Software Center. You should definitely install the "nvidia-settings" program for a laptop for using with 2 screens at times.
