First you can see by http://www.stud.fernuni-hagen.de/q3998142-bin/cgi-bin/ibrd/forums.cgi?forum=5 that there is a lot of misery to share.

If this was my box, I would...

1. Eject that 16GB drive.
2. Make sure that I'm using 80 conductor IDE cables all around.
3. ONE STICK OF RAM TILL it's stable.
4. Set the AGP to 1X till it's stable.
5. The latest BIOS with the safest settings.

In closing, I take it that in your upgrade to XP, you loaded all the drivers for MOTHERBOARD, USB, VIDEO, AUDIO and what else you have. Microsoft doesn't do this for you.

i posted a message a while ago and noticed your name there before trying to help thanks m8

the 16 gig hd is quite pld but i havent had many problems i did try using just the 160 but it was exactly the same and as i seemed to be using the reset button like i was playing a game of track and field i had to re-install lots and format so i decided to use the 160 just for storage (downloads and such that took a while to download)

i didnt know ide conductors came in different types so i will check that asap

my 512 ram is just 1 stick

i would aprechiate it if you could let me know how to change the agp to x1 as i would like to try that

and im scared of doing my bios as i have a pcchips i found the web site very confusing lots of downloads for my m/board with different versions so i have e-mailed them to ask for help

there is 1 more thing i could use some advice on when i was instaling xp i used the ntfs file system but thet was very unstable with many random crashes most during loading then the rest about 2-3 min into windows loading mostly locking up but when i loaded using fat32 it was a lot more stable so i been using that would that make a difference?

thanks again

A few things.

1. "i would aprechiate it if you could let me know how to change the agp to x1 as i would like to try that"

Since BIOS screens vary greatly, you get to find it. If they offer it, it's pretty easy to read as AGP 1X, 2X, 4X...

2. "and im scared of doing my bios as i have a pcchips i found the web site very confusing lots of downloads for my m/board with different versions so i have e-mailed them to ask for help"

This could be the underlying issue. XP is pretty sticky about the BIOS not having issue. An out of date BIOS is just not a good idea.

3. "there is 1 more thing i could use some advice on when i was instaling xp i used the ntfs file system but thet was very unstable with many random crashes most during loading then the rest about 2-3 min into windows loading mostly locking up but when i loaded using fat32 it was a lot more stable so i been using that would that make a difference?"

That's very odd. NTFS or FAT should make zip difference. I can flatly state that this is not the cause of your issue, but more of a symptom of some other issue.
